Chiang Rai Travel Guide

Chiang Rai in One Paragraph

Chiang Rai is Thailand's northernmost big town, about three and a half hours by road from Chiang Mai and an hour and a half by air from Bangkok. Most people come for the temples, and they're the reason it's on the map. The White Temple is a dazzling modern work by a living artist, the Blue Temple glows sapphire inside, and Baan Dam is a dark, strange compound of black houses and animal bones.

The town itself is small, easy and calm, with a night bazaar, a gold clock tower that lights up after dark and a Saturday walking street. Beyond it are the Golden Triangle on the Mekong, the gardens of Doi Tung and the tea terraces of Mae Salong. Two nights covers the temples without rushing, and a third buys a day in the hills. Go between November and February, and avoid March if you can, when the smoke from the burning season settles over the north.

Key Facts

The White Temple now costs ฿200 for foreigners

The fee doubled from ฿100 on 1 January 2026 and now includes the Cave of Art. It opens 08:00 to about 17:30. Cover your shoulders and knees.

The Blue Temple is free and open late

Wat Rong Suea Ten opens 07:00 to 20:00, on the north edge of the center. Baan Dam, about 13 km north, charges ฿80 and opens 09:00 to 17:00.

Two nights for the temples, three with the hills

A day and a half covers the three famous temples, Wat Huay Pla Kang and the night market. Add a day for the Golden Triangle or Doi Tung and Mae Salong.

Three and a half hours from Chiang Mai on the Green Bus

Thirteen buses a day, ฿260–400, into Terminal 1 in the center. From Bangkok, fly in 80 to 95 minutes or take the overnight bus.

Grab works, and the White Temple is a ฿20 bus ride

Local buses from Terminal 1 run to the White Temple gate for ฿20–25. For anything further out, hire a driver, rent a scooter or join a day tour.

November to February is cool and clear, March is smoky

December highs average about 28°C with nights near 15°C. Burning season haze runs from mid-February to April, and August is the wettest month.

Is Chiang Rai Worth Visiting?

Yes, for two nights. The White Temple alone justifies the trip for most people, and it's the most original modern building in Thailand, a temple still being built by the artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, who opened it to visitors in 1997. Put it together with the Blue Temple and Baan Dam and you have three of the country's most memorable sights within half an hour of one small town.

The town itself is the other reason. It's a fraction of Chiang Mai's size, the traffic is light, and an evening means the clock tower, the Night Bazaar's food court and a walk home. It's a good place to slow down after Bangkok or Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai, if you only have time for one? Chiang Mai, for its Old City, its food and its range of things to do. Chiang Rai is the better second stop. If you're short on time, its temples can be seen on a long day trip from Chiang Mai, though I'd rather give it a night.

The Best Things to Do in Chiang Rai

Ordered by how much I'd prioritize them on a first visit of two or three days. The first five are in or near town; the rest need a day out.

The Best Things to Do in Chiang Rai — numbered by rank. 1 Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple · 2 Wat Rong Suea Ten, the Blue Temple · 3 Baan Dam Museum, the Black House · 4 Wat Huay Pla Kang · 5 The Night Bazaar, the clock tower and the walking streets · 6 The Golden Triangle and Chiang Saen · 7 Doi Tung and Mae Salong · 8 Singha Park · 9 Khun Korn Waterfall
  1. 1. Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, About 13 km south of town

The sight that defines Chiang Rai

A brilliant white temple covered in mirrored glass, reached by a bridge over a sea of reaching hands. Inside, the murals mix Buddhist themes with pop culture, from superheroes to movie villains. It's the work of Chalermchai Kositpipat, and it's still unfinished.

Foreigners pay ฿200, which now includes the Cave of Art. Shoulders and knees must be covered, shoes come off inside the main hall, and photos aren't allowed in there.

The strangest sight in the north

The national artist Thawan Duchanee's compound of around 40 black buildings, filled with horns, skins, bones and huge carved furniture. It's the dark answer to the White Temple and the two make a good pair on the same day.

Entry is ฿80, and children under 12 go free.

The point where the Ruak River meets the Mekong and Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet. The view itself is quick. What makes the trip are the Hall of Opium, a big, well-made museum on the region's opium history (฿200, closed Mondays), and the old walled town of Chiang Saen just downstream.

The smaller House of Opium by the viewpoint costs ฿50.

Can You Do Chiang Rai as a Day Trip From Chiang Mai?

Yes, but it's a long day. The road is three to three and a half hours each way, so the day tours leave Chiang Mai around 07:00 and get back around 19:00 or later, with most of the time in the van. They see the White Temple, the Blue Temple and usually Wat Huay Pla Kang, and nothing else in any depth.

If Chiang Rai isn't otherwise on your route, it's a fair trade for seeing the White Temple. If you're heading north anyway, take the Green Bus, stay two nights and see the temples at opening time instead.

How Many Days Do You Need in Chiang Rai?

Two nights suits most trips. On the first day, take the early bus to the White Temple, add Singha Park or Baan Dam in the afternoon, and finish at the Blue Temple and the Night Bazaar. Use the next morning for Wat Huay Pla Kang before you move on.

A third night buys a day out of town. Go north to Doi Tung and Mae Salong for gardens and tea, or to the Golden Triangle and Chiang Saen on the Mekong. Either is a full day with a driver or a tour.

Where to Stay in Chiang Rai

Stay in the center, between the clock tower and the Night Bazaar, where the restaurants, the markets and Terminal 1 are all walkable. Stay on the Kok River for more space, or in the hills only if you have a car.

  1. 1. Nak Nakara Hotel, Town center, near the clock tower

Best base for a first visit

A central hotel with a pool, a few minutes' walk from the clock tower and the Night Bazaar. It's my pick for most people because everything in town is on foot from the door.

  2. 2. Mora Boutique Hotel, Town center

  3. 3. Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort, On the Kok River, edge of town

    A resort stay

A big resort on the river with wide lawns and old rain trees, a short ride from the center. Good if you'd rather come back to a pool than a street.

  4. 4. Riva Vista Riverfront, On the Kok River, north side

    Quiet, by the river

A small riverside resort on the north bank, handy for the Blue Temple and quieter than the center.

  5. 5. Baan Jaru, Town center

A guesthouse with a great host

A small, friendly guesthouse whose host is known for sitting every guest down with a map and a plan.

  6. 6. B2 Chiang Rai Night Bazaar, Next to the Night Bazaar

    Budget

A clean, simple budget hotel a short walk from the Night Bazaar and the bus terminal.

  7. 7. Katiliya Mountain Resort & Spa, Mae Chan, in the hills north of town

A base for Doi Tung and Mae Salong

An all-suite resort in the hills on the way to Doi Tung and Mae Salong, for a night out of town if you have a car.

Getting to Chiang Rai

From Chiang Mai, take the Green Bus. There are 13 departures a day from Chiang Mai's Terminal 3, the Arcade, and the ride takes three hours 20 minutes to three hours 45 minutes, for ฿260–290 in Express class and ฿360–400 in VIP. It arrives at Terminal 1 in the middle of town.

From Bangkok, fly. There are around 20 nonstop flights a day from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi, taking 80 to 95 minutes for about $60–80. Chiang Rai's airport is about 8 km from the center, and a taxi or a Grab costs about ฿150–200. The overnight bus from Bangkok's Mo Chit terminal takes about 11 hours and costs ฿722–842. Getting Around Chiang Rai

The center is small enough to walk, and Grab works for everything else, including the airport. Songthaews and tuk-tuks wait around the clock tower and the bus terminal, and a scooter from your guesthouse covers the temples in a day if you're comfortable riding.

For the White Temple, the local bus from Terminal 1's platform 8 runs 19 times a day between 06:15 and 17:50 for ฿20–25 and stops at the gate. Beyond that, the Golden Triangle, Doi Tung and Mae Salong are a day with a driver or a tour, since the buses only reach the towns, not the sights.

When to Go

November to February is the best time. Days are warm and dry, and the nights are cool, with December highs around 28°C and lows near 15°C at the Chiang Rai weather station. It's also the busiest time, so book the center's hotels ahead for December and January.

From mid-February to April is the burning season, when farmers across the north burn their fields and the haze can turn the air hazardous, worst in March. April is also the hottest month, with highs near 35°C. The rains run from May to October and peak in August, with about 370 mm, when the countryside is at its greenest.
