Khun Korn Waterfall
Khun Korn Waterfall holds the distinction of being the tallest waterfall in Chiang Rai, plunging 70 metres into a forested valley within a national park in Tambon Huai Chomphu, a short drive from the city centre. The setting is largely undeveloped and genuinely natural, offering cool mist, dense jungle vegetation, and a peaceful atmosphere that stands apart from more commercialised attractions in the region. From the car park, a nature trail of approximately 1.4 kilometres winds through the forest to the viewpoint at the base of the falls. The hike takes roughly 90 minutes return and is generally manageable, though the terrain is uneven and can become slippery after rain. The waterfall is viewed from a distance rather than up close, and swimming at the base is not possible, so visitors should set expectations accordingly. A notable highlight along the trail is a large hollow tree, well worth pausing to find on the way through. Good to know: The waterfall is at its most impressive during or shortly after the rainy season, roughly May to October, when water flow is strongest. Visiting in the dry season means a noticeably reduced cascade. Sturdy closed-toe shoes or hiking boots are strongly recommended, as flip-flops are not suitable for the trail conditions. Arriving early on weekends helps avoid crowds. There are no formal listed opening hours or entry fees, so checking local conditions before departure is advisable, particularly following heavy rainfall.

Visitor Reviews
A short trip from Chiang Rai you find the beautiful Khun Korn waterfall. The water drops an impressive 70 meters although it looks like less. From the parking lot a trail leads through the jungle. The hike is 1.4 km both ways and there are some steep hills and the surface can be slippery. I recommend wearing proper shoes and bringing drinking water. I will never forget Khun Korn waterfall because I went wearing flip-flops and had no water, but definitely still worth the visit. Just don’t make the mistake as I did.
Definitely worth a visit to see the tallest waterfall in Chiang Rai. Easy drive there, gentle hike for about 1km to the waterfall. Ensure you follow the nature trail to see the huge hollow tree (go inside and look up). There is also a nice campsite here with a modern clean bathroom. It's also free to enter but please leave a donation.
We had a great time climbing up the valley to the awesome waterfall at the top. Trainers or boots are required as flip flops just won't work. We were there on a Sunday in January 2026. When you see the sign giving you 2 choices choose the one on the right shown as "nature trail". You'll have an amazing time.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
