Wat Phra Kaew

4.7(4,431 reviews)

Wat Phra Kaew holds a singular place in Thai Buddhist history as the temple where the revered Emerald Buddha was discovered in 1434, when lightning struck the stupa and revealed the jade statue within. Though the original image has long since been moved — first to Laos in 1552, and eventually to its current home in Bangkok — the temple displays a highly regarded replica, and remains an active place of worship where visitors are welcome to light candles and incense and make merit with a modest donation. Unlike its more famous neighbours the White Temple and Blue Temple, Wat Phra Kaew carries a quieter, more traditional atmosphere. The architecture is considered simpler in style, but the grounds are peaceful and well-maintained, and the on-site museum — notable for its distinctive brown and green colour scheme — adds an educational dimension to the visit. The combination of genuine spiritual significance and a less crowded setting makes it a meaningful stop for those interested in Northern Thailand's religious and cultural heritage. The temple is open daily from 07:00 to 18:00, making early morning one of the more rewarding times to visit for a calm experience. As with all Thai temples, visitors should dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees before entering any of the buildings. The temple is centrally located in Chiang Rai city along Trairat Road, making it easy to reach on foot or by local transport.

In 1434 lightning struck the stupa at Wat Phra Kaew in Chiang Rai and the Emerald Buddha unveiled. In 1552 the Buddha was moved to Laos as the Kingdoms Lan Na and Lan Sang merged. In 1779 the Siamese invaded Laos and seized the Emerald Buddha. It was taken to Wat Arun where it stayed 5 years. In 1784 it was moved to its current home at the Grand Palace. You should definitely visit Wat Phra Kaew if in Chiang Rai simply because of its history. Please remember to dress accordingly if entering the temple.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
