Chiang Mai vs Chiang Rai: which is better for your trip?
Chiang Mai as the base, Chiang Rai as the two-day add-on: the White Temple, Black House and Golden Triangle are worth the three-hour bus, but Chiang Mai has more to fill a week.

Pick Chiang Mai if…
- You have four days or fewer in the north
- You want the Old City, cooking classes, elephant sanctuaries and Doi Inthanon
- Nightlife, cafés and a choice of hotels matter
Pick Chiang Rai if…
- The White, Blue and Black temples are the reason you're coming north
- You want tea country, hill-tribe homestays and the Mekong at the Golden Triangle
- You prefer a smaller, quieter city with lower prices
Why I'd choose that way
Chiang Mai is the larger city and the easier base: 300-plus temples, the Sunday Walking Street, Doi Suthep, Nimman, and the elephant sanctuaries and treks in the surrounding mountains. It has the international airport and the range of hotels.
Chiang Rai is the artistic outlier. Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) draws more than a million visitors a year, the Black House and the Blue Temple complete the trio, and the province runs north to the Golden Triangle, Doi Mae Salong's tea plantations and Akha, Lahu and Hmong villages. It's quieter, a little cheaper (about ฿800 a day on a budget against ฿900), and its crowds are moderate rather than high.
Both suffer the same March to May burning season, so neither is a fix for the other's smoke. In the good months, the honest answer is Chiang Mai for most of your time and Chiang Rai for two nights.

Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai: the questions people ask
Can I see Chiang Rai as a day trip from Chiang Mai?
You can, and tour vans do it daily, but it's a long day: six to seven hours on the road for a couple of hours at the White Temple. Two nights lets you add the Black House, the Blue Temple and the Golden Triangle without rushing.
Is Chiang Rai cheaper than Chiang Mai?
Slightly: about ฿800 a day on a budget against ฿900, and ฿2,000 against ฿2,500 mid-range. Hotels are the difference.
Which is better for temples?
Chiang Mai for number and age (Wat Chedi Luang, Doi Suthep); Chiang Rai for spectacle (the White and Blue temples are 21st-century art installations). Most people want both.
Which has the better night market?
Chiang Mai's Night Bazaar and Sunday Walking Street are bigger than anything in Chiang Rai. Chiang Rai's night bazaar is pleasant and low-key.
