Phi Phi Day Trip From Phuket

The same lagoon and the same beach, and the time your boat leaves decides how many others are there with you

By Mac Kiley · 12 min read · Updated Oct 28, 2026

Book an early-bird speedboat. It picks you up around 05:00, leaves the pier before 07:00 and goes to Maya Bay first, well ahead of the standard tours, which all arrive between about 09:30 and 11:00. Early-bird tours cost about ฿3,500–3,900 with the ฿400 park fee included, and you're back at the pier around 15:00. If you can't face the 05:00 start, a standard speedboat at ฿2,500–3,000 covers the same stops, Pileh Lagoon, Maya Bay, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, lunch on Phi Phi Don and often Khai Island on the way home, but you'll share each one with the rest of the fleet.

A big boat from about ฿1,900 is the gentler ride if you get seasick, though it takes two hours each way and some never land at Maya. A sunset tour turns the day around and reaches Maya at about 16:30, after the day boats have gone. Below are all six tour types side by side, the timetable of a typical day, which pier your tour actually leaves from, the park fee, the sea by month, and why doing it yourself by ferry costs more than a tour.

Key Facts

The departure time matters more than the boat

Maya Bay opens at 07:00, the day boats from Phuket and Krabi reach it between about 09:30 and 11:00, and Pileh Lagoon fills with the Krabi boats by 10:30. An early-bird tour is there first, and a sunset tour gets there after everyone has left.

The park fee is ฿400, and it's often extra

Foreign adults pay ฿400 and children ฿200 for Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, which covers Maya Bay, Pileh and Bamboo Island. Most premium and early-bird tours include it. Many budget and big-boat tours collect it in cash on the day.

Not every tour leaves from Rassada

The big boats and the public ferries use Rassada Pier near Phuket Town. Most speedboat tours leave from the east-coast marinas, Royal Phuket Marina, Ao Po and Boat Lagoon, and a few from Chalong in the south. Your pickup time depends on the pier.

Speedboats take 45–60 minutes, big boats 2 hours

A speedboat crosses in 45 minutes to an hour and slams on the waves. A big boat takes about two hours and rolls far less. If you get seasick, that's the trade.

November to April is the season

From December to March, rain falls on only 2 to 8 days a month and the crossing is calm. From May to October, some trips cancel on rough days, and Maya Bay closes to landings from 1 August to 30 September while the tours keep running.

Age limits are strict on the speedboats

Most speedboat tours take children from 3 or 4 and adults up to 70 or 75, and they refuse pregnant passengers and anyone with back or heart problems. Children's tickets run about ฿1,800–2,900.

Prices are from operators' own pages and include hotel pickup in the main beach areas, lunch and snorkel gear. Rawai, Kamala, Bang Tao and Laguna often cost ฿200–400 more for the pickup. The park fee is ฿400 for foreign adults and ฿200 for children wherever it isn't included, paid in cash. Maya Bay is closed to landings from 1 August to 30 September.

Which Phi Phi Tour to Book

Every tour from Phuket visits roughly the same water, so the choice comes down to three things, when you reach Maya Bay, how rough a ride you'll accept, and how many people share the boat. Here's how the six types compare.

Early-bird speedboat, the one I'd book

These leave before 07:00 and go to Maya Bay first, then Pileh Lagoon before the Krabi boats arrive. Siam Adventure World's early-bird tour, for one, collects you at about 05:00, sails from Royal Phuket Marina before 07:00, and is back at the marina at about 15:00–15:15, for ฿3,900 with the park fee, or ฿2,900 for children aged 4 to 12. Others run about ฿3,500. You trade a dark-morning start for the two quiet hours, and you're back by mid-afternoon.

Standard speedboat, the classic day

This is the tour most people book. It collects you around 07:00, crosses in under an hour, and runs Pileh Lagoon, Maya Bay, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, a snorkel stop and a buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don, with Khai or Bamboo Island on the way back. The whole day takes 8 to 11 hours from hotel to hotel. Standard speedboats start from about ฿2,400, most cost ฿2,500–3,000, and the park fee is in some prices and not in others. The catch is the timing, because nearly all of them reach Maya Bay together.

Big boat, the gentler ride

Big-boat tours use the ferries' kind of vessel, with a cabin, a top deck and a much smoother ride in a swell. They cost about ฿1,900–2,200 for an adult, leave Rassada or a private pier nearby at about 08:30, and take about two hours each way, so the day has fewer stops and a longer lunch. Read the itinerary before you pay. At least one big-boat tour I read views Maya Bay only from outside the bay and sells the speedboat transfer to land there as an extra. The park fee is usually extra too.

Catamaran

A speed catamaran sits between the two, steadier than a speedboat and quicker than a big boat, at about an hour to an hour and a half across. One Phuket operator sells its catamaran day for about ฿2,900 with 40 to 55 people on board, so it's a bigger group than a speedboat. It suits families and anyone nervous about the speedboat's slamming.

Sunset tour

The reverse of the early-bird, and the other way to see Maya Bay without the crowds. Phuket Sail Tours' version collects you around 09:00, sails from Ao Po at 10:30, does Bamboo Island, lunch and the snorkel stops in the middle of the day, reaches Maya at about 16:30 after the day boats leave, and watches the sunset from the boat before landing at about 18:30. It costs from ฿4,400 with the park fee, for up to 18 guests. It doesn't include the plankton swim. For that, the Phang Nga Bay guide covers Hong by Starlight's night paddle.

Private charter

A private speedboat is priced by the boat, so it only adds up for a group. One Phuket price list starts at about ฿40,700 for a boat of up to 20 people, park fee included. In return you choose the start time, the order of the stops and how long you stay at each, which means Maya Bay soon after it opens and Pileh at a quiet hour. Agree the price, the fee and every stop in writing before you board.

Times are from one operator's published timetable for each tour type (Siam Adventure World, Phuket Hot Deals and Phuket Sail Tours) and a typical standard speedboat day. The order of the stops changes with the tide, the weather and the park's rounds, and the crew decides it on the day. A blank cell means that boat is between stops or hasn't left yet.

The Stops, and What You Can Do at Each

Most of the circuit is on Phi Phi Leh, the uninhabited island where nobody stays, and the rules there are stricter than the photos suggest.

Maya Bay

Your boat drops you at the pier in Loh Samah Bay, on the back of the island, and you walk about 300 m on a boardwalk to the beach. Visits run in one-hour rounds of up to 375 people, you can wade to your knees but not swim, and the park fines swimmers ฿5,000. From 1 August to 30 September the tours view it from the water or skip it. The Maya Bay guide has the history and the rest of the rules.

Pileh Lagoon

Green water inside sheer cliffs, with no beach and no land access. Boats tie off to a mooring line, you jump off the back with a life jacket, and after 20 to 30 minutes the tour moves on. This is the stop where the early start pays off most, because by 10:30 the lagoon is full of boats.

Viking Cave

A photo stop from the boat, nothing more. The cave is closed to visitors because swiftlet nests are harvested inside, so the boat slows down for a look at the collectors' scaffolding and moves on.

Monkey Beach

On Phi Phi Don, with the snorkeling over shallow coral just offshore. The macaques bite, and a bite means a doctor because of the rabies risk, so don't feed them and keep bags zipped. Some tours watch from the boat, which is fine with children.

Lunch on Phi Phi Don

A buffet at a beachfront restaurant in Tonsai, the island's only village, with 30 to 40 minutes to walk the lanes afterward. It's the busiest hour of the day in Tonsai, because every tour pulls in at once.

Bamboo Island and Khai Island

Bamboo Island is a flat ring of white sand about 5 km north of Phi Phi Don, on the same park ticket, and several tours use it for the long swim. Khai Nok is the small island off Phuket's east coast where many speedboats stop on the way home, with shallow, clear water and the easiest swim of the day. Feeding the fish there is banned.

Which Pier Your Tour Leaves From

Most listings say "from Phuket" and leave the pier to the small print, and it matters, because the pier sets your pickup time. Rassada Pier, 3.5 km from Phuket Town and about 18 km from Patong, is where the big boats and the public ferries leave. Most speedboat and catamaran tours sail from the east-coast marinas instead, Royal Phuket Marina, Ao Po and Boat Lagoon, and a few from Chalong Pier in the south. From Patong the van takes 25 to 45 minutes to Rassada and about 45 minutes to Ao Po, which is why pickups start an hour or more before the boat leaves.

If you're staying in Rawai, Kamala, Bang Tao or Laguna, expect a pickup surcharge of about ฿200–400 a person on the cheaper tours, and check it before you compare prices.

The ฿400 Park Fee

Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park charges foreign adults ฿400 and children ฿200, and the one ticket covers Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon and Bamboo Island for the day. Premium, early-bird and sunset tours usually include it. Budget speedboats and big boats often don't, and the guide collects it in cash on the boat or at the pier. A ฿2,500 tour without the fee and a ฿2,900 tour with it are the same price, so compare like with like.

You may see ฿200 quoted as the adult fee. That's the cut Krabi's boat operators asked the national parks department for, and the department kept the fee at ฿400. Every operator page and news report I read still gives ฿400.

The top of my ranked list of the 10 best hotels in Phuket. Each button opens the hotel on Booking.com with your dates filled in.

The Sea, Seasickness and the Month

From November to April the wind blows off the land and the Andaman Sea lies flat, and from December to March Phuket gets rain on only 2 to 8 days a month. That's when the crossing is smooth and every tour runs. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings swell, September and October are the wettest months, at about 350 mm and 336 mm of rain on about 19 days each, and operators cancel on the rough days, usually with a call the night before and a refund or a new date. In those months I'd book a tour with free cancellation and keep a spare day.

If you get seasick, take a tablet before you board. They cost about ฿30 at any 7-Eleven. From Chalong, the first 20 minutes past Cape Panwa are usually the roughest. On a speedboat, sit at the back, where the ride is smoothest, rather than at the front for the photos. If you know boats are a problem, book the big boat.

Children, Pregnancy and Age Limits

The speedboat operators set firm limits. Most take children from 3 or 4 and adults up to 70 or 75, they don't accept pregnant passengers, and they advise against the trip for anyone with back or heart problems. Children's tickets cost about ฿1,800–2,900 depending on the tour, plus the ฿200 park fee where it isn't included. The age bands differ by operator, from 3–11 to 4–12. With young children I'd pick the big boat or the catamaran for the steadier ride.

What to Bring

Reef-safe sunscreen, because sunscreens with oxybenzone, octinoxate, 4-MBC or butylparaben are banned in the marine parks, with fines of up to ฿100,000, and some crews check. Cash for the park fee if it isn't included, for fins (about ฿100 to rent) and for drinks on Phi Phi Don. A towel, because many tours don't supply one. A dry bag for your phone, a hat, a dry change of clothes for the ride back, and seasickness tablets if you need them. Don't book the tour for the day you fly, since a weather delay or a cancellation can't be made up.

Doing It Yourself by Ferry

You can, but it doesn't save money and it lands you at Maya Bay at the worst time. A return speedboat from Rassada costs about ฿1,500–1,700 (the ferry is about ฿1,000–1,400 but takes two hours each way), then the half-day longtail circuit from Tonsai is about ฿1,200–1,500 a person, plus the ฿400 park fee and ฿20 to land at Tonsai. That's about ฿2,600–3,600 before the taxi to the pier, which is about ฿700 each way from Patong. The first boats reach Tonsai at about 09:30, so your circuit reaches Maya Bay in the late morning with the tour fleet, and the last ferry back leaves at 15:30, with speedboats until about 17:00.

Where the ferry wins is when you stay. A night on Phi Phi Don puts you on the 07:00 longtail to Maya Bay, before any boat from Phuket arrives. The Phuket to Phi Phi guide has every departure, and the Koh Phi Phi guide covers where to stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Phi Phi Day Trip From Phuket.

An early-bird speedboat, which leaves before 07:00 and goes to Maya Bay first, well before the standard tours arrive between about 09:30 and 11:00. It costs about ฿3,500–3,900 with the ฿400 park fee and gets you back to the pier around 15:00. If you get seasick, a big boat from about ฿1,900 is the smoother ride.

About ฿1,900–2,200 on a big boat, ฿2,500–3,000 on a standard speedboat, ฿3,500–3,900 on an early-bird speedboat and from ฿4,400 on a sunset tour, per adult with hotel pickup and lunch. Add the ฿400 park fee (฿200 for children) if the price doesn't include it.

45 minutes to an hour by speedboat and about two hours by big boat or ferry, plus 25 to 45 minutes from the west-coast beaches to the pier. A day tour takes 8 to 11 hours from hotel to hotel.

Yes, if you book the early departure. Pileh Lagoon and Maya Bay are worth the boat ride, but a standard tour reaches them between about 09:30 and 11:00 with everyone else. If you can spare a night, the ferry and a night on Phi Phi Don is the better visit.

A speedboat for more stops and an earlier arrival, about an hour each way. A big boat for a smoother ride and a lower price, about two hours each way, with fewer stops. Check that a big-boat tour actually lands at Maya Bay, because some view it only from the water.

On premium, early-bird and sunset tours, usually. On budget speedboats and big boats, often not, and it's collected in cash on the day. It's ฿400 for foreign adults and ฿200 for children.

Big boats and ferries leave Rassada Pier near Phuket Town. Most speedboat and catamaran tours leave the east-coast marinas, Royal Phuket Marina, Ao Po and Boat Lagoon, and a few leave Chalong. Hotel pickup is included in the main beach areas.

No. You can wade to your knees, and the park fines swimmers ฿5,000. You swim at Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island, Khai Island and the snorkel stops instead.

Yes, on most days, though operators cancel when the swell is up, usually with a call the night before and a refund or a new date. Maya Bay is closed to landings from 1 August to 30 September, when the tours view it from the water and give the time to other stops.

Children usually from age 3 or 4, with children's tickets about ฿1,800–2,900. Pregnant passengers aren't accepted on the speedboat tours, and the operators advise against it for anyone with back or heart problems. The big boat is the steadier choice.

For Pileh Lagoon, Maya Bay and the snorkel stops, yes, on a day tour. For the viewpoint, the beaches after the day boats leave and Maya Bay at 07:00 from Phi Phi Don, two nights is better.

Not on a day tour, which collects you from your hotel early in the morning. For the ferry, Rassada Pier is about 35 km from the airport, 40 to 55 minutes by car, and a morning landing connects with the 11:00 or about 13:30 ferries.
