Why go, and how to do it well
Cha-am is the beach town about 29 km north of Hua Hin, across the line in Phetchaburi province, with roughly 5 km of sand along a seafront road of seafood restaurants, beach-chair vendors and low-rise hotels. It's where middle-class Thai families from Bangkok come for the weekend, so it has a different feel from Hua Hin, more picnic mats and inflatable tubes than beach clubs, and prices to match. The water is shallow and gentle, which suits children.
Midweek it's close to empty and very relaxed. On weekends, and above all on Thai long weekends, the parking fills, the umbrellas run end to end and the sand gets packed, which is fun in its own way but not a quiet beach day. The Cha-am Wednesday Night Market and the Premium Outlet on the road back to Hua Hin give it an evening, and Hua Hin's restaurants are half an hour away.

Go Early for Empty Sand
Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. Sunrise walks on Kata, Chaweng, or Railay are magical — and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
Explore Beyond the Main Strip
Every popular beach area has quieter alternatives nearby. Rent a scooter and ride 10 minutes from Patong to find Freedom Beach, or head to Phuket's northeast coast for nearly empty shores.
