The west coast is one long chain of bays. From the north, Mai Khao is the empty one near the airport, Banana Beach and Bang Tao lead down to Surin and Kamala, Patong is the busy middle, and Karon, Kata and Kata Noi run south toward Nai Harn, Ao Sane and Rawai at the island's tip.
Swim from November to April. From May to October the west coast gets big waves and rip currents, so swim only where the lifeguards' flags say you can.
