Why go, and how to do it well
If Patong feels like too much but you still want bars, restaurants and something happening on the sand, this is the compromise most people are actually after. The bay is backed by wooded hills and a working fishing village, and the water tends to be warm with little swell, which is why families keep coming back. Sunbeds, vendors and watersports are all there on the sand, and the beachfront restaurant strip lets you eat looking straight out at the Andaman.
Late afternoon is when it earns its keep. The sunsets pull a crowd, and the beach is long enough for a proper walk before dinner. There are two honest caveats. Some of the beachfront places charge a premium for the position, and the sand can look scruffy after a tide comes in. It isn't the prettiest beach in Phuket, but it's one of the easier ones to spend a whole day at, and it sits usefully between Patong and the quieter beaches further north.

If you find Patong too chaotic but still want plenty of bars and restaurants, Kamala is the place to be. It’s definitely busy and popular in 2026, but the energy is much more "civilized" and relaxed. Great for a long sunset walk. Lots of excellent beachfront dining where you can eat with your feet in the sand. Much cleaner water than the busier spots further south!
Really hard to find a bathroom here just FYI. Only one in the beach walkway and you have to pay 10 baht. Beautiful beach though with tons of restaurants and 7-11 close by. Kamala is a nice area, but the beach is by far not the nicest in the island. You can see some cool creatures and shells around though, but it’s also a bit dirty (especially after a tide comes in).
Great beach, warm water little to no swell, still always be cautious about dangerous tidesa and rips. But just simply a magic place and worth a visit if staying along the northern side of Patong.

Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. A sunrise walk is the best hour of the day on the sand, and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.

Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
