The Tara massage

4.8(234 reviews)

Situated on Koh Samui's busy Chaweng Beach Road, this massage spa has built a strong following among visitors to the island, with guests consistently praising the quality and pressure of its traditional Thai massage treatments. What sets it apart, according to multiple reviewers, is that therapists tend to read the body well without needing repeated instruction — a detail that frequent spa-goers will appreciate. Inside, the atmosphere is quiet and calm, with soft music and a notably clean interior that contributes to the overall sense of professionalism. The one-hour back massage is specifically called out by guests as a highlight, and the staff are described as friendly and attentive. The spa caters primarily to therapeutic bodywork rather than luxury resort-style treatments, making it a practical choice for travellers who want skilled, no-fuss massage work at a conveniently central location. Good to know: most visitors report an excellent experience with traditional Thai massage and deep tissue work, but at least one guest found the oil and aromatic massage options unexpectedly intense, with pressure that was difficult to have adjusted mid-session. If you prefer a gentler, purely relaxation-focused treatment, it is worth communicating your preferences clearly before the session begins. As opening hours are not listed online, dropping in or calling ahead to check availability and confirm current pricing is advisable, particularly during the busy high season between December and March.

Visitor Reviews

10/10. Lovely and quiet, with some calming music playing. Super clean inside. Professional staff who were excellent at providing some of the best massages I’ve had in a long time. What I particularly liked was that they didn’t chat to each other (like a lot of massage shops do). I was staying at the hotel opposite and must have visited these guys 10x times on this one trip. Why go anywhere else!?!

I had a one-hour back massage, and it was incredibly good — just perfect! The whole experience was amazing; the massage was super professional and of the highest quality. On top of that, I was impressed by the care and attention shown. I found here the real Thailand I was looking for. I highly recommend this place. A heartfelt thank-you to my massage therapist!

Came to Thailand for 10 days, went to so many spas but this was easily the best. In most spas, you need to keep telling them please apply more pressure but here it was amazing from the start! Staff were polite and nice. Highly recommend this place. Pricing also very good

Tips for Visiting Wellness & Spas

Learn Wat Pho First

Wat Pho in Bangkok is the birthplace of traditional Thai massage education. Their on-site massage pavilion offers excellent treatments from students and graduates at reasonable prices — and you know the technique is authentic.

Communicate Pressure Preferences

Thai massage can be intense. Say 'bao bao' for lighter pressure or 'nак nак' for harder. A good therapist will check in, but don't hesitate to speak up — suffering in silence defeats the purpose.

Book Longer Sessions

A 60-minute massage is fine, but 90 or 120 minutes allows the therapist to work thoroughly. The price difference is often only 200–400 THB for an extra hour — worth it for a deeper, more relaxing experience.
