Why go, and how to do it well

The Giant Monkey Pod Tree is a single rain tree, the tree Thais call chamchuri, standing on Thai Army cavalry grounds outside Kanchanaburi town. Its crown spreads 60.4 m across, which Guinness World Records lists as the widest crown on any living tree with a single trunk, and it's more than a century old. The branches reach out low and level over the lawn, so most of the visit is walking underneath and looking up.

It's a short stop rather than an outing. Half an hour is plenty, and it fits easily with Wat Tham Suea or Wat Ban Tham on a scooter loop south of town, or on the way back from the war sights. Morning and late afternoon have the softer light and less heat.
