Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Why go, and how to do it well
The Mustang Blu is a café in one of the strangest buildings in Chinatown. The narrow flatiron building on Maitri Chit Road dates from the late 1800s and has been a bank, a hospital and a massage parlor; since a restoration finished in 2019 it has been a 10-room hotel with a café on the ground floor. More than a hundred old window frames were restored for it, and the rooms are full of ferns, peeling plaster, a spiral staircase, a stuffed horse in a glass case by the hotel door and a giraffe that seems to come through a wall. The menu is printed like an old newspaper and tells the building's story on the back page.
You are paying for the room. An iced latte was ฿220 in 2024, and the afternoon tea started at ฿400 a person, both well above a normal Bangkok café. Reviews are split on service and value, but the building itself is the reason to go.
It is open from 11:00 to 22:00. Some visitors report a minimum order per person, so ask before you sit down. It is about five minutes on foot from MRT Hua Lamphong.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
Use Grab for Delivery
The Grab app works for food delivery across Thailand, letting you order from street stalls and restaurants alike. It's invaluable on rainy days or when you want to eat in your hotel.
