Choen
Tucked into Soi Pradu in the Pom Prap district of Bangkok, Choen is a fine dining restaurant helmed by Chef Mew, offering an immersive 10-course Thai tasting menu built around open fire cooking. The restaurant draws attention for its commitment to lesser-known Thai ingredients and traditional culinary techniques, with each dish carefully composed to tell a broader story about Thailand's food culture. The chef personally introduces the meal and guides diners through each course, creating an experience that is as educational as it is gastronomic. The atmosphere is intimate and considered, with the open kitchen and counter seating placing guests close to the action. Dishes are praised for their balance and thoughtfulness, and the service team maintains an attentive, warm presence throughout the evening. For those interested in understanding Thai cuisine beyond the familiar, the restaurant offers genuine depth and character. Choen is open Wednesday through Sunday, with a single evening service running from 19:00 to 22:00. Given the intimate format and tasting menu structure, advance booking is strongly recommended and counter seats are particularly worth requesting for the full chef interaction experience. Check the restaurant's website at choenrestaurant.com for reservations and current menu details before visiting.

Visitor Reviews
Delicious food and told a story about a lot of lesser known ingredients in Thailand. Each dish very well thought out, balanced and tasty! The chef host was a great personality and we had a lot of fun. The seats are all in a line, so a bit tricky with a group larger than 3-4, unless you’re situated on the corner. But otherwise, everyone faces the kitchen, so you’re never lacking for things to look at. Only small criticism is the drink service was very slow. Would have probably spent a lot more if they topped up our wines more aggressively.
One of the best dining experiences I’ve experienced. The attention to detail in the food, theatre and service was superb. Not often do I leave a restaurant feeling so educated about the culinary traditions of a country or place. Highly recommend!
Exceptional meal at Choen! Absolutely loved our evening enjoying the 10 course Thai menu by Chef Mew. Gorgeous restaurant, great service and fantastic food. Highly recommend booking a counter seat here.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
