Kalanbatu Reggae Bar
Tucked along Soi Ram Buttri in Bangkok's famous backpacker precinct, this reggae bar has earned a loyal following among travellers who return visit after visit for its easygoing atmosphere, live music, and genuinely friendly staff. While reggae forms the musical backbone, the playlist stretches across genres, making it welcoming to a broad crowd rather than a niche one. The unpretentious, bare-bones setting — think casual tropical shack rather than polished venue — is very much part of the appeal. Visitors can expect cold drinks at prices considered more than fair for the Khao San Road area, regular live music performances, and a social atmosphere that encourages lingering. The crowd tends to be a mix of backpackers, repeat visitors, and locals, all gravitating toward the same unhurried pace. It also functions as a live music venue and event space, giving some nights a more lively edge despite the overall relaxed tone. Smoking is permitted, which reviewers note as a practical plus for those who want it. Good to know: The bar sits within easy walking distance of Khao San Road's guesthouses, restaurants, and other nightlife options, making it a natural anchor point for an evening out in the area. The atmosphere picks up after dark, so an evening visit is recommended. Dress is entirely casual — there is no dress code, and the vibe actively discourages anything formal.

Absolutely the best bar in the Khaosan area! We went there three times in three days — that says it all. The drinks are delicious, and the music is fantastic, creating an amazing atmosphere every night. A special shout-out goes to the waiter with tattoos, glasses, and dreadlocks — he’s awesome! Super friendly, hardworking, and full of positive energy. He really made our visits even more enjoyable. Highly recommended!
We just love this place. We go there everytime while being in Bangkok. The staff is super nice. Prices for drinks are more than fair. The live music makes it to one of the most authentic places in this area. We will come back for sure!!
Tips for Visiting Nightlife & Bars
Carry Your Passport or a Copy
Clubs and some bars check IDs strictly, especially in Bangkok's Thonglor, RCA, and Sukhumvit areas. A photo of your passport info page on your phone usually works, but carrying a laminated photocopy is safer.
Know the Closing Times
Legal closing time is 2 AM for most venues, though enforcement varies. In Bangkok's designated entertainment zones (RCA, Silom Soi 2/4, Khao San), some clubs stay open until 4 AM. Islands tend to be more relaxed about hours.
Buy Bucket Drinks Cautiously
Island bucket drinks (mixed spirits in a small bucket) are cheap and fun but notoriously strong and inconsistent. Stick to one, stay hydrated, and never leave your drink unattended at beach parties.
