Skip the taxi. If your day involves temples along the river, the blue-flag tourist boat is the sane way to move between them, and this pier is where a lot of people staying near Khao San get on.
Two things to sort out before you board. First, pick your boat. The blue tourist route costs more but stops where you actually want to go, while the cheaper red-flag local ferry runs a slightly different set of piers. There's also an orange-flag express with fewer stops and longer hours. Second, pick a ticket, either a single ride or a round trip around 150 baht that lets you hop on and off all day. Buy at the dock. Reviewers say staff at the pier will tell you which pier you need for where you're heading, which is genuinely useful the first time.
Expect crowds mid-morning through mid-afternoon, and a proper scrum at the Wat Arun stop. Other piers are almost empty. Late afternoon on the water, with the light going and the bridges and temples sliding past, is the run worth planning for.

There are TWO different ferries you can catch along the Chao Phraya River. One is for tourists & costs more & the other is a local ferry that is less expensive. You can buy a ticket at the pier that you are getting on the ferry or you can buy a ticket on the ferry. The views are incredible from the ferry eg bridges, modern buildings, cultural sights such as temples, a myriad of boats on the river & the sunset was amazing. The staff were helpful with which pier we needed to get on/off.
- One of the best & cheapest water taxis for tourists with flexibility of single way tickets and whole day tickets - other 4 water taxi linesroutes are less traversed as all attractions are along the main river - At different stops touridta can switch over to different routes of water taxis - Loved every bit of this boat taxi , amazing ride - will ride it again on my next visit for sure :)
Nearly one hour trip in Bangkok. Best is buying return ticket. 150 baht. So you can hop on hop off anywhere you want.
