Running along Rachadamnoen Road within Chiang Mai's ancient city walls, this Sunday walking street is one of the most celebrated weekly markets in northern Thailand. The route stretches roughly one kilometre from east to west, with additional side streets branching off toward temples and quieter corners, creating far more to explore than the main strip alone. Vendors line the route with handmade crafts, textiles, woodcarvings, silver jewellery, artwork, and street food, much of it reflecting the genuine artisanal traditions of the Chiang Mai region rather than generic tourist merchandise.
The atmosphere is lively and tightly packed, drawing a mix of locals, expats, and international visitors. The Sunday Walking Street is busy, touristy, crowded, but still so much fun. It’s gigantic and could take a long time to see all of it, but even just visiting a small section is fun. Tons of great street food throughout. Bring cash, especially smaller bills if possible. By the way, don’t be afraid of street food in Thailand. I ate street food almost everyday for a month, and never had stomach issues. (Whereas I have had stomach issues from food in Mexico, Ecuador, etc…) Just use common sense, and enjoy. Also if you want to enjoy a big weekend night market with less crowds, check out the Saturday Walking Street, which is just south of the moat on Saturday nights.
This market is packed and alive with energy! There’s so much creativity and funny stuff I’ve never seen before. Definitely a fun experience. Lots of food stalls also . Prices are reasonable, and I didn’t even haggle, but still got discounts when buying combos. If you’re in Chiang Mai, this is a must-do on a Sunday!
I think it’s a nice market to visit if you’re in Chiang Mai, it's open only on Sunday, but be prepared, it's extremely crowded. I arrived at 4:30 PM to be one of the first so it's great, BUT from 6 PM until midnight, it gets absolutely packed with people. So if you want to avoid the crowds as much as possible, come right at the start. There’s a ton of foods with all kinds of options, so definitely come hungry! You’ll also find lots of clothing at cheap prices, as well as paintings, unique bags, and souvenirs. Because of how crowded it gets, I’m giving it 3 stars.
