Zoe in Yellow
Zoe in Yellow is widely regarded as the social heartbeat of Chiang Mai's Old City nightlife scene, drawing a lively mix of travellers and locals to its sprawling outdoor complex on Ratvithi Road. More than a single bar, the venue operates as a multi-zone experience, with chill-out seating areas alongside both open-air and air-conditioned dancing zones — giving guests the flexibility to move between moods across the same night. The music leans toward electronic and hip hop, driven by DJs who tend to hit their stride as the night progresses. Drinks are served at mid-range prices and are generally considered good value for the setting, with buckets among the popular options. The atmosphere shifts noticeably as the evening advances — the complex is relatively relaxed in the early hours but builds into a full crowd from around 10pm to 11pm onwards, with the energy peaking well past midnight. Open every day from 5pm to 1:30am, Zoe in Yellow suits those looking to meet people and dance rather than a quiet evening out. Worth noting: toilet facilities on-site are limited and carry a small charge, so planning accordingly is advisable. Visitors new to the venue are best served by arriving after 9pm to catch the atmosphere at its most lively.

Visitor Reviews
Zoe in Yellow: The Pulse of Chiang Mai's Old City If you’re looking for the epicenter of Chiang Mai’s youth social scene, Zoe in Yellow is less of a bar and more of a rite of passage. Located in the northeast corner of the Old City, it’s the anchor of a vibrant nightlife complex (often called "The Soi") where the energy is high, the drinks are affordable, and meeting new people is practically inevitable. The Atmosphere: High Energy & Social Chaos Zoe is famous for its electric, unpretentious vibe. It’s the kind of place where you start the night sitting at a wooden table in the open-air garden and end it dancing on a stage or in the air-conditioned "dance pit." Social Connectivity: This is arguably the best spot in the city for solo travelers and backpackers to find a "tribe" for the night. The layout encourages mingling, with multiple bars (Roots Rock Reggae, Havana, etc.) just steps away, allowing you to "bar-hop" without ever leaving the complex. The Crowd: Dominated by travelers in their 20s and early 30s, mixed with a healthy dose of local Thai students and expats. It’s casual—think flip-flops and singlets rather than high heels and button-downs. Music & Entertainment The soundscape at Zoe is diverse but leans heavily into the "party" category: Indoor Club: High-energy EDM, Hip-Hop, and Top 40 hits. Outdoor Area: Often features live cover bands playing rock or blues, and occasionally special shows like fire dancers or B-boy performances. Practical Tips for the Best Experience Timing is Everything: The area is relatively chill before 10:00 PM. If you want a seat to chat and enjoy the Mediterranean snacks or Greek-inspired food, get there early. After 11:00 PM, it becomes a packed, high-decibel dance party. The Midnight Curfew: Like most places in the Old City, Zoe usually wraps up around 12:00 AM or 1:00 AM. Expect a mass exodus of people heading toward "After Bars" or street food stalls (the gyros nearby are a post-party legend). Budget Friendly: Drinks are very reasonable (beers around 100–120 THB), and there is no cover charge. Look out for "Bucket" deals if you're with a group. Verdict: If you hate crowds or loud music, stay away. But if you’re looking for a "youth social space" where you can dance your heart out and meet people from five different continents in one night, Zoe in Yellow remains the undisputed king of Chiang Mai.
Very nice outdoor bar with great decorations. There are different zones to enjoy—chill-out seating areas as well as dancing zones (both outdoor and indoor with AC). It’s usually quiet on weekdays but gets very busy on weekends. Drinks are affordable (small beers 100–120 baht, cocktails around 200 baht a glass). Most of the crowd here are tourists. The staff are friendly, and they always check IDs
Was here on Christmas. Great Atmosphere. It gets lively only after 9pm and the DJ is really good. The drinks are reasonably priced and of good quality. Staff was friendly.

Tips for Visiting Nightlife & Bars
Carry Your Passport or a Copy
Clubs and some bars check IDs strictly, especially in Bangkok's Thonglor, RCA, and Sukhumvit areas. A photo of your passport info page on your phone usually works, but carrying a laminated photocopy is safer.
Know the Closing Times
Legal closing time is 2 AM for most venues, though enforcement varies. In Bangkok's designated entertainment zones (RCA, Silom Soi 2/4, Khao San), some clubs stay open until 4 AM. Islands tend to be more relaxed about hours.
Buy Bucket Drinks Cautiously
Island bucket drinks (mixed spirits in a small bucket) are cheap and fun but notoriously strong and inconsistent. Stick to one, stay hydrated, and never leave your drink unattended at beach parties.
