Why go, and how to do it well
Salad Beach, also called Haad Salad, is a sheltered bay on Koh Phangan's northwest coast, the next cove north of Haad Yao. It's a long, soft strip of sand with shade trees and a row of small resorts and beach bars behind it, and the headlands at both ends keep the water calm, which is why so many families end up here.
The reef starts about 100 meters out, close enough to swim to with a mask, so it's one of the island's better snorkeling beaches. Go at mid or high tide. At low tide the water near shore turns shallow and reefy, and there are sea urchins over the rocks, so wear water shoes. The sun sets over the sea here, and the bars fill for it.
There are no public toilets or showers, so plan on buying a drink at one of the beach bars. A songthaew from Thong Sala pier to this stretch of coast is about ฿150 to 250 a person.

Tips for Visiting Beaches
Go Early for Empty Sand
Even the busiest beaches are nearly deserted before 9 AM. A sunrise walk is the best hour of the day on the sand, and you'll beat the heat for a morning swim.
Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen
Many Thai marine parks ban chemical sunscreens that damage coral. Bring reef-safe (mineral/zinc-based) sunscreen from home — it's harder to find and pricier in Thailand.
