Mountains vs island · north and south
Chiang Mai vs Phuket: which is better for your trip?
Two different trips. Chiang Mai for temples, food, elephants and cool nights from November to February; Phuket for beaches and island boat days from November to April. A direct flight of about two hours links them, so a week or more can take in both.

Pick Chiang Mai if…
- Temples, cooking classes, elephant sanctuaries and mountain days matter more than sand
- You're on a budget, at about ฿900 a day against Phuket's ฿1,500
- Your dates are November to February, the north's cool season
Pick Phuket if…
- The vacation is a beach, a pool and boat days to Phi Phi or Phang Nga Bay
- Your dates are mid-February to April, when the north is smoky
- You're traveling with kids who want the sea
Why I'd choose that way
Chiang Mai is northern Thailand in one city, with a moated Old City of 30-plus temples, Nimman's cafés, Doi Suthep on the ridge, Doi Inthanon, Mae Taeng's elephant sanctuaries, 50-plus cooking schools and khao soi, the north's coconut-curry noodle soup. It has no beach. It's the cheapest big city in the country to spend time in, at about ฿900 a day on a budget and ฿2,500 mid-range.
Phuket is the Andaman's base, with more than 30 beaches, from busy Patong and Bangla Road to the family beaches at Kata, Karon and Bang Tao, plus Old Town, the Big Buddha, an international airport and boat days to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay. It costs about ฿1,500 a day on a budget and ฿4,000 mid-range.
The calendar mostly agrees. Both are at their best from November to February. From mid-February to April the north's burning season puts smoke over Chiang Mai, worst in March, while Phuket stays in season until April. From May to October Phuket's seas are rough.
Chiang Mai vs Phuket, category by category
Chiang Mai takes temples and culture, food, cost and getting around. Phuket takes beaches, nightlife and families.
Temples and culture
Chiang Mai winsChiang Mai, with 30-plus temples inside the Old City's moat, among them Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, and Doi Suthep on the ridge above town. Phuket's culture is Old Town's shophouses and the Big Buddha, which reopened in March 2026 and is free.
Beaches
Phuket winsPhuket, with more than 30 of them, from Patong to Kata, Karon and Bang Tao. Chiang Mai is a mountain city, and its water is waterfalls and the Ping River.
Food
Chiang Mai winsChiang Mai, for khao soi, the Sunday Walking Street and 50-plus cooking schools. Phuket eats well too, in Old Town and at Rawai's seafood restaurants, but the north's food is a reason to go in itself.
Nature and day trips
EvenEven, and very different. From Chiang Mai, Doi Inthanon and the elephant sanctuaries of Mae Taeng. From Phuket, Phang Nga Bay's sea caves and the boats to Phi Phi.
Nightlife
Phuket winsPhuket, for Patong's Bangla Road and the beach bars around it. Chiang Mai's evenings are bars and live music around Nimman and the Old City, and the night markets.
Families
Phuket winsPhuket. Kata, Karon and Bang Tao are the family beaches, with big family resorts and their pools. Chiang Mai works well with children for a few days of elephants, cooking classes and waterfalls.
Cost
Chiang Mai winsChiang Mai, at about ฿900 a day on a budget against ฿1,500, and ฿2,500 against ฿4,000 mid-range. Rooms are where the gap shows, with mid-range hotels around ฿1,500 against ฿3,000 on Phuket.
Getting around
Chiang Mai winsChiang Mai, where the red songthaews and Grab cover the city for about ฿40 a day. Phuket runs on Grab, negotiated tuk-tuks and rented scooters, and getting around costs more than twice as much, about ฿100 a day.
Weather
EvenEven from November to February, when both are at their best. Chiang Mai's burning season runs from mid-February to April, so those weeks go to Phuket, and from May to October Phuket's seas are rough.

Doing both Chiang Mai and Phuket
Fly. Thai AirAsia and Thai VietJet run about six nonstops a day in about 2 hours, for ฿1,800 to 2,500 booked ahead. A connection through Bangkok takes four hours at best and usually most of the day, and the one direct GreenBus takes almost 25 hours. In the cool season, do Chiang Mai first and finish on the beach.

Chiang Mai or Phuket? Questions people ask
How long is the flight from Phuket to Chiang Mai?
About 2 hours nonstop on Thai AirAsia or Thai VietJet, for ฿1,800 to 2,500 booked ahead. A connection through Bangkok takes four hours at best and usually most of the day.
Is Chiang Mai cheaper than Phuket?
Yes, about ฿900 a day on a budget against ฿1,500, and ฿2,500 against ฿4,000 mid-range.
Can I do Chiang Mai and Phuket on one trip?
Yes. A week works as two nights in Bangkok, two in Chiang Mai and two in Phuket, with two short flights. Two weeks is easier, with three or four days in Chiang Mai and four to six on the beach.
When should I avoid Chiang Mai?
Mid-February to April, the burning season, when smoke hangs over the north, worst in March. In 2026 the city posted some of the worst air readings on earth.
Does Chiang Mai have beaches?
No. It's a mountain city with waterfalls and the Ping River. For the sea you fly south, and Phuket is the direct flight.
