Penny Thai Cookery School in Ao Nang, Krabi
This cookery school in Ao Nang stands out for the personality at its centre — instructor Penny brings genuine warmth, humour, and deep culinary knowledge to every class, creating an environment that is as entertaining as it is educational. Visitors consistently note the rare freedom to choose their own menu, typically selecting from a salad, soup, stir fry, curry paste, curry stew, and desserts, giving each class a personalised feel that is uncommon among cooking schools in the Krabi area. Classes are hands-on throughout, covering core techniques such as building curry pastes from scratch, balancing the signature flavours of Thai cooking, and working with fresh herbs and aromatics. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, with Penny guiding participants through each step at a pace suited to all experience levels — complete beginners and more confident cooks alike tend to leave with practical skills they can reproduce at home. Good to know: The school is located in the Mueang Krabi district, accessible from Ao Nang and the broader Krabi area. As class times and availability are not listed online, contacting the school directly to confirm schedules and secure a booking is strongly recommended, particularly during the busy tourist season between November and April. Comfortable clothing is advisable for a day spent cooking.

The BEST cooking class ever!! Apart from the fact that you can actually choose what to cook (1 salad, 1 soup, 1 stir fry, 1 curry paste, 1 curry stew + 2 desserts), which is very rare to find in such cooking classes we've previously taken, the place is spotless, clean & organized and all of the ingredients are the freshest. The cherry on top is Penny! She explains all of the recipes in such patience, and tells about the ingredients and how you can substitute them depending on where you're from, so you can actually succeed at cooking them at home. She had great energy, answered all of our questions, and made jokes during the entire class which made it so fun! The cooking part is quite short & quick which allows more time for her explanations but the outcome is amazing! The food we cooked was tastier than some of the most authentic Thai restaurants in Thailand, and it's a huge amount & variety, especially considering the length of the cooking time. Penny has 3 sessions you can choose from (morning, afternoon & evening), and I really recommend taking the morning class as it's usually less busy so you can all of her attention - in our morning class it was just me and my husband, so basically we had a private class! At the end of the class she sends the pictures of all the ingredients, as well as the recipes and the special Thai ingredients she recommends buying here in Thailand so you can get to the same unique taste even when you cook them back at home. The entire experience was 10 out of 10!! If you're in Krabi, this is one experience you definitely don't want to miss!
Great experience!!! We had a lot of fun cooking with Penny, she is lovely and a great instructor 😍 We chose 5 dishes and 2 desserts, all were delicious and very easy to make. We highly recommend this fun experience for everyone, we are a family of 5 (kids 18,14,11), the kids had no trouble cooking independently and could choose how spicy to make their dishes (or not at all), now they love Thai food, which they were not willing to try before… Also the pickup from the hotel to the cooking class and back was great service and included in the price.
We were looking for a Thai cooking class and chose Penny Cooking School. It was a fantastic experience. Penny is truly a character — she knows how to entertain while teaching authentic recipes in a way that is never boring and incredibly simple. The result was the best Thai dishes we’ve ever had. The place is surrounded by greenery and is wonderfully peaceful. At the end of the class, during which Penny taught us techniques and ingredients, she sent us all the recipes and instructions via WhatsApp. A fantastic experience!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
