Phuket Thai Cooking Class by Chef VJ

5.0(1,537 reviews)

Add the market tour. That's my main advice here, and past participants say the same thing over and over. You get walked through the ingredients you're about to use, handed local fruit to taste, and given the chance to buy things before a minibus runs you over to the kitchen. Skip it and you've still got a good class. Take it and you've got the whole picture of how Thai food actually works.

Chef VJ's setup gives everyone their own prep station and cooking station, which is why beginners cope fine. Instructors guide you dish by dish, and reviewers keep mentioning patience, humour and a careful eye on safety around hot pans. Three or four dishes is the usual count, done in roughly an hour and a half, with things like chicken satay, crab curry, chilli lime fish and tamarind prawn coming up on the advanced session. You eat what you cook at the end. Nobody goes home hungry.

It isn't the cheapest way to spend a morning in Karon, and one reviewer admits to hesitating over the price before deciding it was worth it. I'd agree with that reading.

Reviews from Google

We booked the advanced session the day before and everything from the first WhatsApp conversation to the actual cooking was extremely well organised. 1. The team drove us to the food market where they gave us a really nice tour, introduced us to some of the ingredients we'd be using and gave us a bunch of local fruits to taste! 2. Our instructor Gigi carefully guided us throughout the session which included preparing chicken satay, crab curry, chilli lime fish and tamarind prawn. They also let us join the mango sticky rice demo although it wasn't technically on the list which was nice. I can safely say, nearly all the dishes we prepared were the best versions we'd had so they really have nailed the recipes. Thanks to the entire team for this experience. We'd highly recommend it! My only piece of feedback would be for VJ. Every session had its instructor and she was running the main one, but would've been nice to have had a little chat with her or if she'd checked in and said hi given it's "Cooking class by VJ". Only a minor thing and Gigi was brilliant!

I was slightly skeptical about this due to the price but it is so worth it. I would recommend including the market tour - it is interesting and I enjoyed tasting all the fruits. You then get in a minibus to the kitchen where you get your own individual preparation station and a cooking station. You get guided through how to prepare and cook four different dishes. The teachers and assistants are super helpful and funny!

A great experience which will enhance your appreciation of Thai cuisine. The teachers were pleasant and gave clear directions. The Market tour is worth doing to learn about local foods. The meal is delicious

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Popular Activities Online

Booking platforms like GetYourGuide give you instant confirmation and, on many activities, free cancellation — and you can read recent reviews before committing. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
