Phuket Thai Cooking Class by Chef VJ

5.0(1,297 reviews)

Located on Patak Road in Karon, this Thai cooking school led by Chef VJ offers a structured, hands-on culinary experience that appeals to travellers with all levels of cooking confidence. Classes are designed to be beginner-friendly while also catering to those seeking a more advanced session, making it a practical choice for solo travellers, couples, and groups alike. The school's approach combines cultural immersion with practical technique, giving participants a genuine understanding of Thai cuisine rather than a surface-level introduction. The experience typically begins with a guided visit to a local food market, where instructors walk participants through local ingredients, with opportunities to taste unfamiliar fruits and learn about the produce that forms the foundation of Thai cooking. Transport to and from the market is provided. Back in the kitchen, instructors are noted for their patience, clear guidance, and attentiveness to safety, creating an atmosphere that is relaxed and enjoyable even for those who do not consider themselves confident cooks. Dishes prepared during class are eaten together at the end of the session. Classes run daily from 10:00 to 19:00, and bookings can be arranged via WhatsApp, which reviewers note is a smooth and well-organised process. The market tour option is offered as an add-on and is widely recommended by past participants as a worthwhile inclusion. Booking at least a day in advance is advisable, particularly during peak season. Visit the school's website at phuketthaicooking.com for current pricing and session details.

Visitor Reviews

We booked the advanced session the day before and everything from the first WhatsApp conversation to the actual cooking was extremely well organised. 1. The team drove us to the food market where they gave us a really nice tour, introduced us to some of the ingredients we'd be using and gave us a bunch of local fruits to taste! 2. Our instructor Gigi carefully guided us throughout the session which included preparing chicken satay, crab curry, chilli lime fish and tamarind prawn. They also let us join the mango sticky rice demo although it wasn't technically on the list which was nice. I can safely say, nearly all the dishes we prepared were the best versions we'd had so they really have nailed the recipes. Thanks to the entire team for this experience. We'd highly recommend it! My only piece of feedback would be for VJ. Every session had its instructor and she was running the main one, but would've been nice to have had a little chat with her or if she'd checked in and said hi given it's "Cooking class by VJ". Only a minor thing and Gigi was brilliant!

This was a great experience and I would recommend it to anyone remotely interested in food, you don't really need to enjoy cooking itself, you will enjoy it. I would recommend taking the option with the market visit, you will try and learn about the local foods and taste some produce when you are there, opportunity to buy as well. The class is well done, with everything prepared for you and you just having fun with working the ingredients and then cooking which is a fast process. The 3 dishes you cook are great and tasty as well! Definitely would recommend when you have a chance to do this class!

I was slightly skeptical about this due to the price but it is so worth it. I would recommend including the market tour - it is interesting and I enjoyed tasting all the fruits. You then get in a minibus to the kitchen where you get your own individual preparation station and a cooking station. You get guided through how to prepare and cook four different dishes. The teachers and assistants are super helpful and funny!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
