Rachamaya Retreat Massage & Spa
Tucked into Chiang Mai's historic Phra Sing neighbourhood on Ratchamanka Road, this retreat-style spa and massage centre draws visitors seeking authentic Thai therapeutic treatments in a genuinely restorative setting. Reviewers consistently highlight the beautifully renovated traditional surroundings, the welcoming atmosphere, and the quality of treatments ranging from traditional Thai massage and hot compress therapy to Gua Sha facials — the latter delivered with warm beds, a steam machine for pore preparation, and complementary neck masks. The space itself is part of the appeal: guests describe arriving to calming music, herbal scents, and clean, cosy treatment rooms that ease the transition from the busy streets of the old town outside. The hot compress treatments use herbal blends that reviewers describe as authentically scented and long-lasting in their warmth, reflecting a clear commitment to traditional Thai wellness practices rather than a generic spa experience. Good to know: Rachamaya is open every day from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, making it easy to fit around a full day of sightseeing — nearby temples, local restaurants, and the Saturday and Sunday Walking Street markets are all within comfortable walking distance. Booking ahead is advisable, particularly during the peak cool season between November and February when Chiang Mai sees its highest visitor numbers. Evening appointments are a popular choice for travellers looking to wind down after a day of exploring.

Visitor Reviews
I just stepped off a long flight and this was exactly what my body and nervous system needed. From the moment I arrived, I felt completely held. The spa is set inside a beautifully renovated traditional Thai house, and it preserves such a deep sense of Thai heritage and calm—you feel it the second you walk in. The staff welcomed me with so much warmth and kindness, and I was greeted with the cutest, most refreshing coconut 🥥—a perfect touch after travel. They even went above and beyond by letting me shower since I couldn’t check into my hotel yet, which instantly made me feel cared for and human again after a long journey. Em gave me one of the best massages I’ve ever had—deep, intentional, and grounding, yet somehow still gentle. Exactly what my jet-lagged body needed. I also treated my tired face to their Gua Sha facial, and wow—pure bliss. I left feeling restored, radiant, and deeply relaxed. Everything about this experience was beyond amazing. Thoughtful, traditional, and genuinely heart-led. Even the tea set at the end. I can’t wait to come back.
We came to the hotel and spa by complete chance, and we are so lucky we did! The place smells like a spa, there is nice relaxing music, the room is clean and cozy, the water is hot, and the bed is very comfortable ❤️ We are celebrating our honeymoon, and the staff prepared a surprise for us. Everyone was so sweet. Then we decided to enjoy the spa, how could we not, when it is right next to the room? We had a couple’s Thai massage, and it was relaxing and so, so good. We highly recommend coming here for a stay, or at least for the spa.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "I am absolutely in love with this Rachamaya hot compress! The herbal scent is incredibly authentic and soothing—it immediately turns my living room into a spa. It holds heat much longer than other compresses I’ve tried, and the weight of it provides a deep, penetrating relief for my sore shoulders. It’s become my go-to ritual after a long day at the desk. Highly recommend for anyone needing some serious self-care!"

Learn Wat Pho First
Wat Pho in Bangkok is the birthplace of traditional Thai massage education. Their on-site massage pavilion offers excellent treatments from students and graduates at reasonable prices — and you know the technique is authentic.
Communicate Pressure Preferences
Thai massage can be intense. Say 'bao bao' for lighter pressure or 'nак nак' for harder. A good therapist will check in, but don't hesitate to speak up — suffering in silence defeats the purpose.
Book Longer Sessions
A 60-minute massage is fine, but 90 or 120 minutes allows the therapist to work thoroughly. The price difference is often only 200–400 THB for an extra hour — worth it for a deeper, more relaxing experience.
