ร้านหม่าล่า88 麻辣烧烤 The Thai Street
Tucked along Ratchamanka Road in the Phra Sing district, this Sichuan-Thai fusion grill bar draws a loyal local crowd while remaining close enough to Chiang Mai's main attractions to suit travellers. The concept centres on interactive grilling — diners pick their selections from a fridge and hand them to the grill master, choosing from a wide range of skewers starting at just 5 baht. The kitchen also serves crowd-pleasing Thai staples like pad thai, with vegetarian options available and mains priced accessibly for budget-conscious visitors. The atmosphere leans casual and convivial, with ambient lighting and an R&B soundtrack that sets a relaxed evening mood. Reviews consistently highlight the friendly staff, the authentic local feel, and the fact that it draws as many neighbourhood regulars as it does curious visitors — a reliable sign that the food and value hold up beyond tourist appeal. It functions equally well as a sit-down dinner spot or a late-night stop after exploring the city. Opening hours run from 3pm to 1am every day of the week, making it one of the more practical late-night dining options in central Chiang Mai. Arriving earlier in the evening generally means a calmer experience; later hours bring a livelier crowd. Groups should consider checking the Facebook page or calling ahead to confirm table availability, particularly on weekends. Take-away orders are also accommodated, useful for those wanting skewers on the go.

Visitor Reviews
We stumbled upon this hidden gem of a Thai restaurant in the neighborhood, and what a delightful find it turned out to be! The place has a charming, ambient vibe with beautiful music playing in the background, spotless surroundings, and prices that are unbelievably budget-friendly. The highlight is their live BBQ – with over 50 different skewers to choose from, you simply pick your favorites and watch them sizzle right in front of you. We went all out with crab meat fried rice, chicken pad thai, 12 skewers, and a couple of beers – all for just 570 baht! Portions for the mains are huge and perfect for sharing. The staff here are genuinely warm, polite, and always eager to serve. To top it off, it’s the only spot in the neighborhood that stays open until 1am on weekdays – a true blessing for late-night cravings. A ravishing little place that checks every box – food, service, price, and atmosphere. A must-visit!

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
