Nam Yang Kung Fu Retreat

4.7(66 reviews)

Nestled in the scenic surroundings of Pai, approximately three hours north of Chiang Mai, Nam Yang Kung Fu Retreat offers an immersive training experience that combines kung fu, self-defence, and mindfulness practices. It draws visitors from around the world who are seeking something more than a typical wellness stay — a structured program that challenges and develops body, mind, and spirit in equal measure. Training is led by attentive and experienced instructors who create a calm, welcoming environment for students of varying fitness levels. The retreat runs programs that range from short visits to extended stays, including a teacher training course for those wishing to deepen their practice significantly. Visitors consistently describe the atmosphere as having a distinctive personal energy, with the natural setting of Pai adding to the sense of retreat and focus. The experience is widely described as genuinely life-changing rather than simply recreational. Good to know: the full training program can be physically demanding, so prospective visitors should assess their current fitness level before arrival and communicate this to the retreat in advance. Those considering a longer stay for serious study should reach out directly to discuss program options and availability, as this is a structured retreat rather than a drop-in facility. Pai itself is a small, relaxed town with a cool climate relative to lowland Thailand, so packing layers is advisable, particularly for early morning training sessions.

Visitor Reviews

I found what I was looking for.......... Nam Yang is not only set in the most beautiful surroundings (Pai, 3 hours north of Chiang Mai, Thailand), but its personal energy and set up is special too! Over the years I have trained in different styles of Kung Fu, I have held my passion from teenager to 40+ and I wasn't disappointed during my brief stay. I attended here for a week, learning Qi Gong, Basic techniques, (pushing and sticky hands), sequences and a weapon - functional stretching and high levels of fitness. The plan is to return - this will happen in August. Also during my week, I experienced quality, kindness and a wide range of knowledge/experience. The standard here is high, the attention to detail for fitness, mindful thought and the Kung Fu spirit was clear. There is a choice of accommodation (solo or shared), food is great, nutritional/varied, plus you will need to cater for your training needs - if you are there to cleanse/reset, then you will be catered for, if you are there to develop and push yourself, you will need to ensure you react to your body's needs. Nam Yang is more than a retreat, it is a place to grow, open your mind to simplicity and take your life in a new direction.

My experience at the Kung Fu retreat was truly unforgettable. From the very first moment, I felt welcomed and completely at ease. The teachers and instructors were incredibly attentive, calm, and present. Their patience and genuine care created a safe and supportive environment for everyone. A special mention goes to Master Ian, who is not only a very kind and warm person but also deeply inspiring. He has a natural ability to guide and motivate others, and there is so much everyone can learn from him — not only about Kung Fu, but about mindset, discipline, and inner balance. What I loved most was the sense of community. We truly functioned like a family. We ate together, trained together, learned, grew, and even played together. There was a beautiful spirit of unity and mutual support that made the whole experience even more special. This retreat was more than just training — it was a journey of growth, connection, and self-discovery. It is a memory I will carry with me for a long time, and I am deeply grateful for the experience.

I truly enjoy training at Nam Yang. I’ve been here for a few months now and the experience has been life-changing. I completed the teacher training course and have begun teaching classes, yet I still see myself as a student learning something new every day. The environment is beautiful, peaceful, and perfect for deep focus. The teaching is excellent, the instructors are very supportive, and Master Iain is an incredible teacher with deep knowledge and presence. The food is healthy, organic, and fits my vegetarian lifestyle perfectly. Both my physical and spiritual growth have skyrocketed since being here. I’m able to join regular classes while also having the freedom to train independently using the gym and practice spaces. Overall, Nam Yang is a truly special place for growth, discipline, and transformation. Highly recommended. 🙏🏾

Tips for Visiting Wellness & Spas

Learn Wat Pho First

Wat Pho in Bangkok is the birthplace of traditional Thai massage education. Their on-site massage pavilion offers excellent treatments from students and graduates at reasonable prices — and you know the technique is authentic.

Communicate Pressure Preferences

Thai massage can be intense. Say 'bao bao' for lighter pressure or 'nак nак' for harder. A good therapist will check in, but don't hesitate to speak up — suffering in silence defeats the purpose.

Book Longer Sessions

A 60-minute massage is fine, but 90 or 120 minutes allows the therapist to work thoroughly. The price difference is often only 200–400 THB for an extra hour — worth it for a deeper, more relaxing experience.
