Ko Ang Seafood

4.2(1,750 reviews)$$$$

Turn up hungry after five, because this place doesn't open its doors until 17:00, and that alone tells you what it's for. This is an evening seafood restaurant in the old-town end of Phuket, the sort where the cooking is straight Thai, the plates land in the middle of the table and nobody's fussing over presentation. Mid-range prices, so you can order properly for a group of four without wincing.

I'd treat it as a Phuket Town dinner rather than a destination. If you're staying in the beach resorts on the west coast it's a drive, and there's plenty of seafood closer to you. But if you're already in town for the shophouses and the Sunday market, it's an easy walk-or-short-ride option that stays open until 23:30, which is later than a lot of the town kitchens. Go early in the service, around six, if you want a quieter room. Later on it fills.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food

Learn the Spice Scale

Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Follow the Crowds

The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.

Ice Is Safe

Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
