Wattana Panich is Bangkok's most famous pot of soup, a third-generation beef noodle shop on Ekkamai whose enormous cauldron of broth has been kept simmering — strained, tended and topped up rather than emptied — for around fifty years. The 'perpetual stew' made the shop an internet phenomenon, but the reason to come is the bowl itself, deeply concentrated beef broth over braised beef, tendon and meatballs, with a goat-meat version for the adventurous, at everyday street prices that make the pilgrimage almost free.

The room is exactly what it should be — worn tiles, the great blackened pot out front, family members working the ladles — and the crowd mixes Ekkamai locals with food travelers holding cameras. Go hungry and order the mixed beef bowl; the broth is the point.
