Sühring

4.6(1,753 reviews)$$$$

German cooking is not what most people fly to Bangkok for, which is exactly why this one is worth your evening. Twin brothers Thomas and Mathias Sühring run the kitchen out of a restored private villa on a quiet soi off Yen Akat, and the whole thing is tasting menu only. Classical European technique, seasonal ingredients, dishes that lean on the brothers' own memory and heritage rather than borrowed trends. There's a drinks programme built to sit alongside the food rather than compete with it.

The setting does a lot of work. Indoor and outdoor spaces, a small number of covers, and enough distance from traffic noise that you forget which city you're in. Service knows the menu inside out without lecturing you about it. Plan for a long, slow dinner rather than a quick one, and don't schedule anything after.

This is luxury pricing and it doesn't pretend otherwise. It's a special occasion place, or a stop for travellers who care properly about fine dining. Smart casual works, though the room leans formal.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food

Learn the Spice Scale

Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Follow the Crowds

The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.

Ice Is Safe

Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
