Rung Rueang serves what many consider Bangkok's definitive bowl of tom yum noodles, with pork broth sharpened with lime, chilli, fish sauce and ground peanuts over noodles of your choosing, loaded with minced pork, slices, liver and crispy wonton skins. The Michelin guide has listed it year after year, and the shophouse on Sukhumvit 26 comes with Bangkok's favorite piece of noodle trivia — a family split produced two nearly identical shops side by side, each claiming the legacy, both excellent, feuding gently over the same recipe.

The experience is classic Bangkok noodle-shop. Order by pointing (noodle type, dry or soup, tom yum yes), sit at a shared steel table, doctor the bowl from the condiment caddy, and be finished twenty minutes after you arrived, changed slightly as a person.
