Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Why go, and how to do it well
Craftsman Roastery at Old Town is the specialty coffee stop for anyone doing the temples. It sits in a century-old Sino-Portuguese shophouse on Bamrung Mueang Road, opposite the Ministry of Interior and a few minutes on foot from the Giant Swing and Wat Suthat, and the restoration kept the old facade. The team roasts its own beans, and Time Out singles out two of them, a house blend called Wrench Wood with rum-raisin notes and a light-roasted single origin from Huai Khun Phar village in the north. Pies are baked in house.
A latte costs about ฿115 to ฿120 going by recent reviews, which is normal for specialty coffee in Bangkok. There is free Wi-Fi and a long table where people work, but it is a small room, so it suits an hour's break more than a full day on a laptop.
It opens at 07:30, earlier than most Old Town cafés, which makes it the natural first stop before the Grand Palace crowds build. It closes at 17:00. The Golden Mount and Wat Saket are a 10-minute walk east.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
Use Grab for Delivery
The Grab app works for food delivery across Thailand, letting you order from street stalls and restaurants alike. It's invaluable on rainy days or when you want to eat in your hotel.
