Sae Phun ข้าวหน้าไก่แซ่พุ้น
This long-standing Thai-Chinese eatery on Thanon Tanao in Bangkok's historic Phra Nakhon district has earned Michelin recognition for its deceptively simple yet carefully executed rice dishes. The signature plate — chicken stew with rice, Chinese sausage, and a fried egg — draws a loyal following of locals and in-the-know visitors alike, and the kitchen also turns out prawn rolls and crispy noodle dishes that regularly earn praise from first-time diners. The setting is casual and unpretentious, typical of a neighbourhood lunch spot that has built its reputation on consistency rather than atmosphere. Expect a queue, particularly during peak hours, though waits are generally short — around ten minutes. The menu is focused and approachable, with staff known to guide newcomers toward standout items. Pricing sits firmly in the budget range, making it an honest representation of everyday Thai-Chinese eating culture in Bangkok. Good to know: Sae Phun opens at 8am and closes at 2:30pm daily, and popular dishes sell out before closing time — arriving by early afternoon is advisable. The location near Old City temples and traditional shophouses makes it a natural stop when exploring the area on foot. Cash is the practical choice for payment. Note that a food court version of the menu is available at Siam Paragon, but the Tanao Road location offers the full, original experience.

Amazing home cook meal! We went there around 2pm and were the group before last. They sold out after a couple behind us. There was a line but the wait wasnt too long. Roughly about 10 minutes. We drove past again today around 9am and there was also a long line in front, so plan accordingly. Super delicious chicken stew, feel like a home cook meal. The staff was also very friendly and attentive despite being very busy. Clean and have a clean restroom inside.
Another Bangkok Michelin gem quest. Their signature, chicken stew with rice, chinese sausages and fried egg is perfect. Simple dish yet good presentation, mouth watering and absolutely delicious. The stew gravy is thick, savory, bit sweet with generous and tender chicken chops. Limited tables and seats but orderly queue. Good service, fast, clean and tidy preparation, affordable price too. Highly recommended.
We were up bright and early our 1st full day in Bangkok and so happy Sae Phun was open early! The prawn dumplings were so delicious! The chicken stew with crispy noodles was definitely my fav but we also tried the rice with chicken stew and my toddler loved it too. They were so sweet to my toddler and gave him a toddler friendly spoon to eat with. Highly recommend

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
