Ayatana Charoen Krung is a matcha café in a restored old building near the Sam Yaek junction, on the stretch of Charoen Krung between the Old Town and Chinatown. The building has been a department store, a Chinese publisher and a bank in its time. Inside it is calm and Scandinavian in style, built around a sculpture of a hand letting go of balloons. The name comes from the Buddhist idea of the six senses, and the café began in Bang Saen before opening here.
The matcha is imported from Japan and the grades change with the season, served straight, with milk or hojicha, alongside coffee, tarts and plated desserts. The detail people remember is the coin. Every item you order comes with one token to drop into a donation box, and the café gives the total away each month.
It is open every day from 09:00 to 18:00. MRT Sam Yot is the nearest station, and it sits on the walk between Wat Saket and Yaowarat, so it fits naturally into an Old Town and Chinatown afternoon.
