Ko Tao

4.4(1,773 reviews)

Situated in the Gulf of Thailand, Ko Tao has earned a strong reputation as one of Southeast Asia's premier destinations for scuba diving and snorkelling. The island's clear, warm waters and healthy coral reefs make it a natural draw for underwater enthusiasts at all experience levels, from first-time divers completing open-water certifications to seasoned divers exploring the surrounding marine life. Above the waterline, the island offers a relaxed, unhurried atmosphere that balances natural beauty with a lively social scene centred around beachside bars and casual resorts. Visitors can expect a mix of scenic white sand beaches, rocky headlands, and dense jungle interior, giving the island more texture than a typical beach destination. The main hub around Mae Haad and Sairee Beach offers the greatest concentration of accommodation, restaurants, and dive schools, while quieter corners of the island reward those willing to explore a little further. The vibe skews young and international, with a well-established backpacker and dive community alongside travellers seeking a more laid-back retreat. Good to know: Ko Tao is accessible by ferry from Chumphon on the mainland or from the neighbouring islands of Ko Samui and Ko Pha Ngan. The best conditions for diving and snorkelling generally fall between April and October when visibility is at its clearest, though the island receives visitors year-round. Those planning to dive should consider booking a dive school in advance during peak season, as courses fill quickly.

Tips for Visiting Islands

Book Ferries on 12Go.Asia

The 12Go platform lets you compare ferry operators, times, and prices between islands. Book a day or two ahead in high season. Avoid the cheapest operators if reviews mention safety concerns.

Check Island Closures

Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Koh Tachai close mid-May to mid-October. Some smaller islands reduce ferry service in monsoon season. Always verify schedules before planning your route.

Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy

Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.
