Tanote Bay

Tanote Bay sits on the quieter eastern side of Koh Tao, offering a more sheltered and less crowded alternative to the island's busier beaches. The bay is well regarded for its excellent snorkelling and diving conditions, with rocky outcrops and coral formations close to shore that attract a variety of marine life. The relatively calm, clear water makes it accessible for swimmers of different experience levels, and the surrounding hillside scenery adds to its appeal as a scenic natural setting. The atmosphere at Tanote Bay is relaxed and unhurried, drawing visitors who prefer a quieter pace over the bustle of Sairee Beach or Mae Haad. A small number of beachside restaurants and bungalows line the bay, giving it a low-key, self-contained feel without being entirely undeveloped. Longtail boats occasionally pass through, and the bay can be reached by road or by boat from other parts of the island. The bay is accessible at any hour and is open year-round, though conditions vary by season. The Gulf of Thailand side of Koh Tao generally sees calmer seas between March and September, making this the more comfortable period for snorkelling and swimming. Visitors travelling by scooter should be prepared for a steep and winding road on the approach, particularly after rain when the surface can become slippery.
