Bangkok to Hua Hin

Ten southern-line trains a day call at Hua Hin from Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat terminal (the long-distance services moved there from Hua Lamphong in 2023), but the shape of the timetable is the whole story. Special Express No. 43 at 07:30 is the one fast morning train, an air-conditioned Daewoo railcar, all second class, reclining seats with curtains and a snack-cart service, 3 hours and 1 minute to Hua Hin for ฿330, then on to Surat Thani. Because Hua Hin is roughly a third of that train's route, SRT opens its seats 30 days before departure, and the weekend dates go within days. If you can get it and you don't mind the early start, it is the best way to arrive in Hua Hin, period.

The next departure is not until 15:10, and that is Rapid No. 171, the train the YouTube reviewers keep recommending as the easy alternative, with fan-cooled second class for ฿150 or third class for ฿94, windows down, vendors walking the aisle with fruit and grilled chicken, arriving at 18:44 with a sunset on the right-hand side for the last half hour. It is a 19-hour train to Sungai Kolok on the Malaysian border, and Hua Hin is less than a quarter of its route, so under SRT's rule its seats go on sale only the day before, which is why it rarely sells out. The same is true of Special Express No. 37/45 at 16:10 (fan seats ฿150, an air-conditioned seat about ฿400, plus sleepers) and No. 31 at 16:50, the modern Chinese-built sleeper to Hat Yai, which has no seats at all, so a second-class berth is ฿702 upper or ฿802 lower and first class ฿1,002 or ฿1,202, silly money for three and a half hours but a genuinely comfortable ride if that is the kind of trip you are on. Express No. 83 (18:50, to Trang) and No. 85 (19:50, to Nakhon Si Thammarat) carry every class from ฿194 third-class seats to a ฿978 first-class berth and, because Hua Hin is just over a quarter of their routes, they open 30 days out. The late rapids (No. 169, No. 173, No. 167) and the 22:50 railcar No. 39/41 (฿330, the same stock as No. 43) get you in between 21:20 and 02:04, which only makes sense if a Hua Hin hotel is expecting you.

Then there are the ordinary trains, which do not leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat at all. No. 255 leaves Thon Buri at 07:20 and No. 251 at 13:10; No. 261 leaves the old Hua Lamphong station at 09:20 and reaches Hua Hin just before 14:00. They are third class only, plastic seats, ceiling fans and open windows, about 30 stops and four and a half hours, and the fare is ฿44 (Richard Barrow's guide still lists ฿42; the counter charged ฿44 in September 2026). Tickets are sold only at the station on the day, so turn up an hour or two early. On price and on the experience of leaving Bangkok through the back gardens of the suburbs from a century-old Italian-designed station, the 09:20 from Hua Lamphong is the sleeper hit of this route, and it lands you at your hotel at check-in time.

No. 43 is a set of 1990s Daewoo diesel railcars refurbished with reclining seats, drop-down trays, curtains and cold air-conditioning; bring a layer. Seats are reserved and numbered, and you enter Krung Thep Aphiwat's platforms from Zone E on the ground floor about 15 minutes before departure by scanning the QR code on your e-ticket or paper ticket at the barrier, then take the escalator up to the platform and find your coach number. There is a toilet on board, staff sell snacks and drinks from a cart, and the train has been arriving within a few minutes of 10:31 since the double-track upgrade finished. What you give up is the open window. The railcar is quiet and sealed, and the reviewers who have done both say it feels a little removed from the countryside going past.

No. 171 and the other fan-cooled trains are the opposite. The windows are down, the ceiling fans work well enough once the train is moving (hot while it sits in the station), the seats are four across and wider than a minibus, the toilets are usable, and vendors board at each stop with sticky rice, grilled chicken, cut fruit and cold drinks. Second class gets you a padded seat and a bit more room for ฿150; third class is ฿94 and a slightly padded bench. The evening sleepers make up the beds around 18:00, so on No. 37/45 or No. 83 you'll share a carriage with people settling in for the night while you get off three hours later. Only a few carriages on those trains are air-conditioned, and they are the ones that fill first.

The ordinary train from Hua Lamphong is plastic seats, fans, open windows and about 30 station stops, and it is the ride people write home about. You leave through the century-old station hall with its curved iron roof and stained glass, roll out past the back doors of Bangkok's rail-side houses, and pay ฿44 for four and a half hours. Bring water, a hat and sunglasses for the dust, and expect it to run 15 minutes late. Whatever train you take, Hua Hin's platforms are elevated and modern (opened December 2023) and the original red-and-cream royal station of 1926, built for Rama VI's court, is preserved right beside them at street level. You step off into the town's most photographed spot, ten minutes on foot from the night market and the clock tower.

Nor Neane's minibuses from the Ekkamai (Eastern) terminal are the workhorse for anyone staying around Sukhumvit. The terminal is next to BTS Ekkamai, departures run roughly every hour from 05:00 to 19:00, the counter fare is ฿200 in cash (12Go and the other sites sell the same seat for about ฿296 with the booking fee), and the run is three and a half to four hours with a couple of fuel stops. While the terminal is being rebuilt the Hua Hin counter is stand 24, the blue one at the end. The vehicles are the newer 'minibus' type rather than the old Toyota vans, four seats across with air-conditioning and curtains, but the seats are narrow, there is no charging and no water, and luggage space is hand-luggage only. On the Hua Hin side the driver stops on request along Phetkasem Road, so ask for the clock tower for the old town and the beach hotels, or Market Village for the south end, before it carries on to its own stop north of the center. From Mo Chit 2, the van terminal beside the Northern Bus Terminal, JKP runs five departures a day (06:30, 10:00, 14:00, 16:00, 18:00) for ฿220 at the counter or ฿313 online, ending at Market Village.

There is exactly one full-size bus between central Bangkok and Hua Hin, Sombat Tour's VIP coach, three seats across, toilet on board, USB-A at the seat, ฿291 at the counter and ฿341 on 12Go, twice a day and about four hours. It serves both the Southern Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and Mo Chit 2, so check the boarding point on your ticket; in Hua Hin it uses Sombat's own station a three-minute walk from Bluport mall at the south end of town, and you'll need your passport to board. The tourist vans sold around Khao San Road with hotel pickup cost ฿449 to ฿1,068 and are the least reliable of the family.

Flying into Suvarnabhumi with Hua Hin as your first stop, skip Bangkok altogether, because Roong Reuang's coaches leave from the ground floor (Level 1) near Gate 8 eleven times a day between 06:30 and 18:30, cost ฿361 at the desk (฿425 on 12Go), and take about four hours in a 24-seat VIP coach with a toilet, with one comfort stop. The catch is where they stop, the RRC bus station on Phetkasem Road beside Hua Hin Airport, about 7 km north of the clock tower, so allow a 15-minute Grab into town. From Don Mueang there is no direct coach worth planning around; take the airport bus or rail link across town to Ekkamai, or book a transfer.

A private car is the family pick and the only option that leaves when you do. A fixed-fare transfer booked on 12Go is mostly ฿2,400 to ฿2,900 for a sedan from a Bangkok address and about ฿3,900 for a nine-seat van, with the price agreed before you leave and hotel-to-hotel drop-off in about three hours. A metered taxi flagged in the city will negotiate ฿1,500 to ฿2,500 depending on the hour and your Thai; Grab quotes vary the same way. On a Friday evening none of them beat the train, because the Phetkasem highway south of Bangkok simply fills up.

There is no flight. Hua Hin Airport's only scheduled routes are Chiang Mai (Thai AirAsia) and U-Tapao and Surat Thani (EZY Airlines); nothing flies from Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang. When Skyscanner or Expedia show a 'Bangkok to Hua Hin' fare, it is a connection through Chiang Mai that takes most of a day. The high-speed line to Hua Hin exists only as a plan with a 2032 target, and the first Thai high-speed line, Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima, is itself still under construction.

The train wins on arrival. Hua Hin station is in the middle of town. The Hua Hin Night Market and the Hua Hin Clock Tower are about 400 m east along Damnoen Kasem Road, the beach sois and the fishing pier a further ten minutes, and a Grab to a hotel anywhere in the center is ฿60 to ฿100. The Ekkamai minibus and the JKP van drop along Phetkasem Road, the main north–south street, so get off at the clock tower for the old town and the beachfront hotels, or at Market Village for the resorts south of the center; both are on the west side of the street, so you'll cross to the sea side. Sombat Tour's big bus ends at its own station beside Bluport mall, 3 km south of the clock tower, which is right for the Khao Takiab end of town and a ฿100 Grab from the center.

The airport coach is the outlier, since it terminates at the RRC bus station next to Hua Hin Airport, about 7 km north of the clock tower on Phetkasem Road. Grab works from there, and the green songthaews running south along Phetkasem are the ฿10–40 alternative if you're traveling light. Wherever you arrive, the cell signal is fine and Grab is cheap and plentiful in Hua Hin; the town's own tuk-tuks quote tourist prices, so open the app.

The return timetable is even more lopsided than the outbound one. Special Express No. 40, the air-conditioned railcar, leaves Hua Hin at 14:36 and reaches Krung Thep Aphiwat at 18:05 for about ฿330, and it is the only comfortable daytime train; Rapid No. 170 leaves at 06:40 (fan seats, ฿94 third class, 10:50 arrival) and everything else between midnight and 05:17 is a northbound sleeper passing through. The ordinary trains run to Thon Buri at 06:25 and 12:44 and to Hua Lamphong at 14:56 for ฿44, on the day only. For most people the minibus is the practical answer going north. Nor Neane's minibuses to Ekkamai leave from beside Bluport mall roughly every hour from 05:00 to 19:00 for ฿240, JKP's vans to Mo Chit 2 leave Market Village at 08:10, 10:00, 12:00 and 16:00 for ฿220, Sombat Tour's big bus leaves its station beside Bluport at 09:30 and 13:30 (฿291, Southern Terminal then BTS Mo Chit), and Roong Reuang's coaches to Suvarnabhumi run 06:00 to 18:00 from the RRC station by the airport for ฿361, timed so a 10:00 departure makes an afternoon international flight.
