The Honest Answer: Van for Speed, Train for the Arrival
Bangkok to Hua Hin is about 200 km and takes 3–4 hours whichever way you go. Minivans leave Ekkamai roughly hourly from 05:00 to 19:00 for ฿296 (about 4 hours); the train runs 3–4 hours from Krung Thep Aphiwat for ฿194–620 by class (or ฿42 on the slow ordinary trains from Thon Buri and Hua Lamphong), with the 07:30 Special Express No. 43 doing it in about 3 hours for around ฿330; a direct Roong Reuang coach from Suvarnabhumi airport costs ฿340–425; and a taxi or private car is ฿1,800–3,000 for about 3 hours. The train's the pick if the timetable fits, since you step off beside Hua Hin's 1926 royal railway station. The real variable is weekend traffic, which can add 1–2 hours to any road option. The family pick, and the sane choice for late-night arrivals. It's the only road option that leaves on your schedule.
Avoid Friday evening south and Sunday evening north
Leave Bangkok early Friday afternoon or wait until Saturday midday, and come back Monday if you can. My advice is the train, which is immune to the traffic.

Bangkok to Hua Hin by Train: Schedule, Fares and the Famous Station
Special Express No. 43 at 07:30 is the one to book — 3 hours, about ฿330
Around nine or ten southern-line trains a day call at Hua Hin from Bangkok's Krung Thep Aphiwat terminal (the long-distance services moved there in 2023). The catch is the timetable's shape: most departures cluster in the afternoon and evening because they're long-haul sleepers passing through, so Special Express No. 43, the 07:30 air-conditioned railcar arriving 10:31, is the one fast morning option, and it sells out. Slower ordinary trains still leave the old stations in the morning: No. 255 from Thon Buri at 07:20 and No. 261 from Hua Lamphong at 09:20, about four hours, ฿42 in third class, tickets sold at the station on the day only. One quirk worth knowing: SRT only sells advance tickets on the long-distance trains for journeys covering at least a quarter of the route, so on the evening sleepers you may have to buy on the day. That's another reason No. 43 is the one to book. Confirm current times on SRT's D-Ticket site, as schedules shift.
Fares are almost a rounding error: ฿42 in third class on the ordinary trains, ฿194 for a third-class seat on the rapid and express services, ฿250–330 in second class, around ฿330 for the modern Special Express railcar. And the arrival is the point. Hua Hin's 1926 railway station, the red-and-cream royal waiting pavilion built for Rama VI's court, is preserved as a landmark right beside the new elevated platforms that opened in late 2023. You step off the train into the town's most photographed spot, a ten-minute walk from the night market and the old beach sois.

Bangkok to Hua Hin by Van, Airport Bus or Taxi
The road options — and the traffic windows that break them
Nor Neane's Ekkamai vans are the workhorse: hourly from 05:00 to 19:00, ฿296, about four hours, arriving at the Soi 51 van station a short ride north of Hua Hin's centre. JKP runs five daily departures from Mo Chit 2 at ฿313, and the Southern Terminal fields big buses and vans from ฿270, the big buses being the slowest of the family at up to five hours. Ekkamai's BTS connection makes it the pick for Sukhumvit-based travellers.
Flying into Suvarnabhumi with Hua Hin as your destination? Roong Reuang's airport coach leaves from Level 1 near Gate 8 around 13 times a day (฿340–425, about four hours) and terminates at the bus station on Phetkasem Road. No Bangkok detour, no luggage wrangling across town. Then there's the private car: ฿1,800–3,000, three hours door to door, and the only road option that leaves on your schedule. It's the family pick, and the sane one for late-night arrivals. Whatever you choose, plan around the weekend tide: leave Bangkok early Friday afternoon or wait until Saturday midday, and come back Monday if you can.
Our rule of thumb: if you've no luggage constraints and a flexible morning, take the train for as little as ฿42, worth it for the station arrival alone. Otherwise it's the Ekkamai van, the airport coach if you're landing at BKK, or a private car for families. I wouldn't start the drive at 5pm on a Friday.
