Ayutthaya to Bangkok
An hour back to Bangkok, with a stop at Don Mueang on the way
Ayutthaya to Bangkok is about 80 km and the train takes about an hour. Most trains back run in the afternoon and evening. The air-conditioned Bangkok Connex leaves Ayutthaya at 15:00, 17:55 and 19:50 every day and takes about 75 minutes to Krung Thep Aphiwat for ฿50, and long-distance trains coming down from Chiang Mai and the northeast leave at 13:08, 15:39, 16:04, 16:41, 16:48, 18:59 and 21:22, about ฿20 in third class.
Check live Ayutthaya → Bangkok times and seats on 12Go
Every one of them stops at Don Mueang station, across from the airport, before Bangkok. Mornings are thin, with a weekday Connex at 06:50, a weekend one at 10:40 and a rapid at about 06:15. Vans run back to Mo Chit for ฿150–220. If you're on a day trip, the 15:00 Connex or No. 8 at 16:48 are the ones I'd plan around, and remember the ferry from the island to the station stops around 17:30.

Ayutthaya departures from thailandtrains.com, Krung Thep Aphiwat arrivals from the State Railway's timetable dated 5 December 2025; thailandtrains has No. 134 arriving at 07:20 and No. 8 leaving at 16:50. Bangkok Connex arrivals are worked out from its 75-minute run. Every train stops at Don Mueang about 15 to 17 minutes before Krung Thep Aphiwat.
The Train Back to Krung Thep Aphiwat
Almost every train coming south from Chiang Mai, Ubon and Nong Khai stops at Ayutthaya on its last hour into Bangkok, which is why the times bunch the way they do. The night trains arrive between about 03:00 and 05:30, there's a rapid at about 06:15, and then nothing long-distance until No. 72 at 13:08, then a cluster of four between 15:39 and 16:48 and two more in the evening. Third class costs about ฿20, and Ayutthaya is a short hop on these long trains, so you buy the ticket at the station shortly before the train and take whatever seat is sold. The special expresses, Nos. 8 and 22, are second-class air-con seats only and cost more.
Bangkok Connex fills the gaps. It's the direct air-conditioned service on refurbished Japanese railcars that SRT launched in August 2026, and it leaves Ayutthaya at 15:00, 17:55 and 19:50 every day, at 06:50 on weekdays and at 10:40 on weekends and holidays, stopping at Bang Pa-in, Rangsit and Don Mueang and reaching Krung Thep Aphiwat about 75 minutes later. The fare is ฿50, seats are unreserved, and tickets are sold only at the station. The ฿50 began as a launch promotion and SRT has kept fares at ฿30–50 since, so check the price at the window.
Krung Thep Aphiwat, the old Bang Sue, has the MRT Blue Line underneath it for Chatuchak, Sukhumvit, Silom and Chinatown. The slower ordinary trains run to Hua Lamphong instead, a few times a day, in 1.5 to 2 hours for about ฿15–20, which suits you if you're staying in Chinatown or near the river. Check their times on the board at Ayutthaya station.
On a day trip, the 15:00 Connex gets you back for an early evening, and No. 8 at 16:48 or the 17:55 Connex give you the whole afternoon. The 19:50 Connex lets you stay for sunset at Wat Chaiwatthanaram.
Straight to Don Mueang Airport
If you're flying out of Don Mueang, the train is the easy way. Every long-distance train and every Connex stops at Don Mueang station, about 15 to 17 minutes before Krung Thep Aphiwat, and a skywalk links the station to the terminal's second floor. From Ayutthaya that's well under an hour, for about ฿20, which beats a van to Mo Chit and a taxi back out.
For Suvarnabhumi, there's no direct train. Ride to Krung Thep Aphiwat and take a taxi from there, or with bags and a group, take a Grab or taxi straight from Ayutthaya.

Getting From the Temples to the Station
Ayutthaya station is on the east bank, across the river from the island where the temples are, so leave time to get back across. The ferry from the landing near the station costs ฿10, or ฿20 with a bicycle, and the last boat is around 17:30. After that, or from Wat Chaiwatthanaram on the far bank, a tuk-tuk round by the bridge to the station costs about ฿150.
Vans, Grab and Taxis
Vans run back to the Mo Chit van terminal, next to Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal, for ฿150–220. They leave when full rather than to a timetable and take 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on Bangkok's traffic, which in the evening rush can make them slower than the train. Book on 12Go to see the pickup point and an e-ticket, or ask at your guesthouse.
A Grab to central Bangkok costs about ฿900 and a metered taxi about ฿1,300–1,500, about 1.5 hours on the expressway. With three or four people and bags it's comfortable, and it goes to the door, including Suvarnabhumi.
Is There a Boat From Ayutthaya to Bangkok?
Not a public one. The way to ride the Chao Phraya back is a river-cruise day trip booked in Bangkok, such as Grand Pearl's, which goes out by coach to Ayutthaya and Bang Pa-in and brings you back down the river by boat with lunch, from about ฿1,850. You can't join it in Ayutthaya for the boat leg only.
