Erawan Falls in One Paragraph
Erawan Falls is a seven-tier waterfall in Erawan National Park, about 70 km from Kanchanaburi town and roughly 200 km west of Bangkok. The water runs over limestone into a chain of turquoise pools you're allowed to swim in, and the falls take their name from Erawan, the three-headed elephant of Hindu myth, because the top tier is said to look like one. A path climbs about 2 km from the car park to the seventh tier.
The first three tiers are an easy walk and the busiest, and the crowds thin out with every tier above them. Get there for the 08:00 opening on a weekday, give it three hours, and stay in Kanchanaburi the night before, because from Bangkok it's a long day either way.

The Seven Tiers of Erawan Falls
| Tier | Name | From the car park | What it's like |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lai Khuen Rang | About 500 m | Small cascades over rock steps. Easy to reach and busy. |
| 2 | Wang Macha | About 600 m | A big pool under a single drop, full of fish. Toilets and seating nearby, and the last tier where food is allowed. |
| 3 | Pha Nam Tok | About 700 m | Taller and more impressive than the second. Good for swimming and photos, and busy. |
| 4 | Oke Nang Phi Suea Samut | About 900 m | Named after the sea giantess of Thai epic poetry. The path gets steeper from here. |
| 5 | Buea Mai Long | About 1.4 km | A cluster of small falls with several pools. The longest climb between tiers. |
| 6 | Dong Pruksa | About 1.7 km | Monkeys are often around here, so zip your bag. |
| 7 | Phu Pha Erawan | About 2 km | The top, reached by a scramble up wet rock. The clearest pool and the fewest people. |
Tier names and distances follow the park signs as hikers report them; totals differ by a few hundred meters by source. Swim only where the rangers allow it.
Is Erawan Falls Worth It?
Yes, if you get there early. It's one of the most visited waterfalls in Thailand, with more than half a million visitors to the park in 2024, and the reason is simple. The pools really are that color, you can swim in most of them, and the walk between them is shaded forest the whole way. The small fish in the pools, mostly garra, nibble at your feet, which some people love and some don't.
The catch is the crowd. By late morning on a weekend the first three tiers are packed with families and tour groups from Bangkok, and if that's all you see you'll wonder what the fuss is about. Keep climbing. Past the fourth tier the path gets steeper and the numbers drop, and the top tiers are much quieter, especially on a weekday.
It's less impressive late in the dry season, around March and April, when the flow drops. If you're choosing between Erawan and Sai Yok, Erawan is the better swim and Sai Yok is the easier stop on the way to Hellfire Pass.
How Long Does the Erawan Falls Hike Take?
Plan on three hours. That's enough to climb to the seventh tier, swim in two or three pools and come back down without rushing. Walking straight up takes about an hour and a half, and the descent about half an hour. If you only want the lower tiers, an hour is plenty.
The path is concrete or steps for most of the way, so the first three tiers suit anyone. From the fourth tier it's steeper, with stairs, roots and wet rock, and the last stretch to the seventh is a scramble. Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops, and bring swimwear, a towel and a dry bag. There are toilets for changing near the first two tiers.
The timing matters more than the fitness. The park lets people in until 15:30, but the upper tiers close earlier, and rangers start sending people down from the top around 15:00. If you arrive after lunch you'll reach the seventh tier just as it closes, so aim to be at the gate by 09:00. A golf cart runs from the visitor center toward the first tiers for ฿20 if you want to save the first stretch.
How to Get to Erawan Falls From Kanchanaburi
Bus 8170 runs from Kanchanaburi bus station to the park gate for ฿60 and takes about an hour and a half. You can also flag it down on Highway 323 before the River Kwai bridge. The 08:00 is the one to take, and it gets you in with most of the day ahead.
Coming back, the last bus leaves the falls at 16:30, which fits neatly with the upper tiers closing. If you miss it, there's no easy fallback, so keep an eye on the time.
The other way is a driver or a scooter. It's about 70 km, and having your own wheels lets you add the Srinagarind Dam or Tham Phra That cave on the way back. Hire a driver for the day or rent a scooter in town.

Erawan Falls From Bangkok
By public transport it's possible in a day, but only just. An early bus from Bangkok's Southern Terminal, about two hours, gets you to Kanchanaburi for the 09:40 bus to the falls, and the 14:30 back leaves time for a bus to Bangkok in the evening. That's about seven hours on buses for three at the falls, and the train is no help, arriving at 10:30. Spend the night in Kanchanaburi instead, catch the 08:00 bus, and you'll be on the trail before the tour groups.
If one day is all you have, take a tour. Day tours from Bangkok leave early, drive the whole way, and usually pair the falls with the River Kwai bridge or the war cemetery on the way back. Expect a 12-hour day, with about three hours at Erawan.
Where to Stay for Erawan Falls
Stay near the park if the falls are the point of the trip, so you can be at the gate at 08:00. Stay in Kanchanaburi town if you're also seeing the bridge and the war sights, and take the first bus out.
1. Erachon Raft Resort, Tha Kradan, a few kilometers from the park
Closest to the fallsRaft rooms on the river a few kilometers from the Erawan gate, close enough to be first in at opening time and back for a swim in the afternoon.
2. Z9 Resort, Tha Kradan, on the reservoir
Over-water villas near the parkVillas over the water in the same subdistrict as the park, handy for the falls and the Srinagarind Dam. You'll want a car.
3. U Inchantree Kanchanaburi, Kanchanaburi town, beside the bridge
Falls plus the townA riverside hotel by the River Kwai bridge, my pick if you're giving Kanchanaburi two or three nights and Erawan one of the days.
4. Good Times Resort, Kanchanaburi town, on the river road
Mid-range in townOn the river road where most of the town's guesthouses and restaurants are, a short ride from the bus station for the 08:00 bus.
Camping in Erawan National Park
The park has a campground. Pitching your own tent costs ฿30 a person a night, and you can hire a two-to-three-person tent for ฿225, with sleeping bags, mats and pillows for a few baht more. Sleeping in the park puts you at the falls before anyone arrives from town.
The national parks' online booking system was still down in mid-2026, so for the park's own bungalows you need to phone the visitor center on 034 574 222, ideally with a Thai speaker to help.
Other Things to See Near Erawan Falls
1. Tham Phra That, Erawan National Park, about 12 km northwest of the visitor center
A cave after the swimA limestone cave about 544 m long, reached by an 800 m uphill concrete path from the ranger station. It closes after heavy rain, so ask at the visitor center first.
2. Srinagarind Dam, Tha Kradan, a few kilometers from the park
A quick view stopThe dam on the Khwae Yai just outside the park. It's free and worth half an hour for the views over the lake and the hills if you have a car.
3. Kanchanaburi town and the River Kwai bridge, About 70 km southeast
The war historyThe bridge, the war cemetery and the Thailand–Burma Railway Centre are the reason most people come to the province. My Kanchanaburi guide covers them, along with Hellfire Pass and the train to Nam Tok.
When to Visit Erawan Falls
The falls are fullest in and just after the rainy season, roughly July to December. September and October are the wettest months, with more than 200 mm of rain each at the Kanchanaburi weather station, so the water is at its strongest then, though the pools can turn cloudy after a storm. November and December are the sweet spot, still full, clearer and cooler.
March to May is the hot season, with April highs around 38°C, and the flow is at its lowest. Go early on any day and avoid weekends and long Thai holidays, when the queue of cars can stretch for kilometers. Over Songkran in mid-April, expect to get soaked on the way in, so keep your phone in a dry bag.
Plan the rest of the trip.
