Mae Somchit Kata Fresh Market
Tucked along Patak Road in the Karon district, this neighbourhood market serves both local residents and visitors looking for an authentic glimpse into everyday Phuket life. Unlike tourist-oriented shopping areas, it functions as a working local market where vendors sell fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood, spices, and dry goods sourced from regional suppliers. A small food section operates alongside the produce stalls in a night-market-style layout, offering cooked Thai dishes at reasonable prices — reviewers highlight the quality of the food, with whole fish and curry rice among the popular choices. The atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious, with a cool local vibe that appeals to travellers wanting something beyond the usual resort experience. It is a popular stop on cooking class itineraries in the area, making it a practical and educational destination for anyone interested in Thai ingredients and cuisine. Spices and dried fruits also make for easy, packable souvenirs to bring home. Good to know: the market opens at 6:00 AM every day of the week and runs until 8:00 PM, but arriving in the morning gives the best selection and the most comfortable shopping conditions before the heat of the day sets in. Bring a reusable bag for produce purchases, wear comfortable shoes, and come with small bills — this is a fixed-price market catering to locals, so haggling is not expected.

Visitor Reviews
Small market with a cool local vibe. Great place to get fruits, veggies, spices and dry fruits to bring back home
Good market to go if you are staying in the hotels near by. They sell, fish, veggies, food, and a bit of everything. The restaurant is more for tourists but it has good prices. I had a whole fish with sweet and sour sauce (300 bht) and it was delicious, the soups (around 120 bht) were great too and the prices really good. Great service too.
Did a cooking class which had a market visit and this was the market we visited. Lots of fresh local produce here and it was great getting the local commentary from the chef on what to look out for when selecting the produce.

Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping
Haggle at Markets, Not Malls
Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
