Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Green Elephant Sanctuary Park sits in Choeng Thale, inland from Bang Tao and Laguna on Phuket's west coast, and with close to 4,000 Google reviews it's one of the busiest sanctuaries on the island. It's a hands-on place. There's no riding, but the half-day programs are built around feeding the elephants, joining them in a mud bath and rinsing them off under a shower, so plan on getting dirty.
That puts it on the opposite side from Phuket Elephant Sanctuary and Phuket Elephant Nature Reserve, which don't offer bathing at all. World Animal Protection, which assesses elephant venues, advises against bathing with elephants, so if you'd rather keep your distance, pick one of those instead.
