Why go, and how to do it well

The rules here are absolute, and that's the whole point. No riding, no bathing with the elephants, no tricks for the camera. Small groups follow the herd through forest and grassland at whatever pace the animals feel like, feed them from a sensible distance, and hear each one's rescue story from guides who clearly care about them. If you came to Thailand wanting a photo of yourself on an elephant's back, this isn't your place, and I'd argue that's a good thing.

It sits in the forest behind Khao Lak, roughly an hour north of Phuket, so it's an easy day trip if you're staying on that stretch of coast. Half-day programs run morning and afternoon with pickup across the Khao Lak area. The morning slot tends to be the cooler walk, which matters more than you'd think when you're on uneven ground for a few hours. Wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy.
