Elephant Wildlife Sanctuary

4.4(619 reviews)

Set in the Thalang area of northern Phuket, this sanctuary offers visitors a meaningful alternative to conventional elephant tourism, with a clear emphasis on responsible animal care and conservation. Guests interact directly with resident elephants in a natural setting, participating in activities such as preparing and hand-feeding fruit, clay rubs, and bathing — all designed around the animals' wellbeing rather than performance. The sanctuary also serves fresh, on-site vegetarian meals, which visitors frequently highlight as a worthwhile experience in their own right. The atmosphere is unpretentious and grounded. Reviewers note that expectations matter here — this is not a polished, resort-style attraction, but rather an authentic wildlife environment where the focus remains firmly on the elephants. Visitors learn about individual elephant histories and behaviours, and the experience is offered in two- or four-hour formats, giving travellers flexibility based on their schedule. The sanctuary operates seven days a week from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Good to know: booking in advance through the official website is strongly recommended to secure a spot and confirm which activities are included on the day. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven natural terrain, and bring a change of clothes if participating in water activities. Early arrival tends to work well, as the cooler morning hours are when elephants are most active and engaged.

Visitor Reviews

I visited here on vacation with my mom, and we were initially a bit skeptical since some places don’t always treat animals well. But after doing our research and reading the reviews, we decided to go — and I would go back in a heartbeat! The staff was incredible, especially our guide, Natthaphat. He was so knowledgeable about the elephants and incredibly kind. Honestly, I think he could’ve been a professional photographer — he took so many amazing photos for us throughout the experience! I was also really impressed by how attentive the staff was to families. They went above and beyond to make sure kids felt safe while parents could still relax and enjoy the visit. We even got one-on-one time with Bruno, one of the elephants, who was so playful and clearly adored by his handler. You can really feel how much they care for these animals. I guess we can talk about Bruno now. Next time I’m in Phuket, I’ll definitely be coming back!

Love the experience of being around these amazing creatures. It was the most amazing and one of my bucket list. The experience was wonderful everything from cutting their fruits and feeding them to rubbing mud on their skin which I learned helps to protect their skin, to bathing with them. The whole time felt safe and our guide was very informative and super kind to all the elephants. I felt blessed to be around these gentle creatures. Thank you so much.

I would recommend this adventure with a purpose to everyone. You can choose your adventure 2 or 4 hours. You help chop up the treats you'll feed them. You scrub the elephants down with a clay rub, shower them off, and get in the pool to rinse them off. It's a once in a lifetime experience. It'll leave you with your heart full of love for the elephants and the people who take care of them.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
