Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket (Bang Tao Branch)
Set within a jungle landscape in Bang Tao, this wildlife sanctuary offers visitors a chance to spend time with a resident herd of rescued elephants — ranging widely in age — in an environment designed around the animals' wellbeing rather than performance or rides. The focus is on observation and hands-on care, with activities centred on feeding the elephants bamboo and bananas, bathing, and walking alongside them with guidance from on-site handlers. The natural setting adds to the authenticity of the experience, and the staff are noted by visitors for being knowledgeable and engaging. Experiences are available daily from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, making this a practical half-day activity that fits easily into a Phuket itinerary. The sanctuary accommodates both pre-booked groups and, in some cases, walk-in visitors, though availability can vary. It is worth noting that visitor experiences have ranged from highly positive to more mixed, so reading through the programme details carefully before booking helps set accurate expectations around what ethical interactions at the sanctuary involve. Booking in advance through the sanctuary's website at elephantjunglesanctuary.com/phuket is recommended to secure a spot. Wear light, breathable clothing and closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven, potentially muddy jungle terrain, and bring a spare set of clothes if you plan to participate in bathing activities. The Bang Tao location is in the northwest of Phuket, close to the Laguna resort area, making it convenient for visitors staying on that side of the island.

Visitor Reviews
What an absolutely unforgettable experience We turned up without a booking and were welcomed so warmly — within minutes we were feeding the elephants for just 900 baht, and it honestly became one of the highlights of our entire trip. Hannah showed us around and she was truly AMAZING. So kind, knowledgeable and passionate, she made us feel completely at ease and taught us so much about the elephants. We were able to stroke them, spend real time up close, and capture incredible photos and videos — all in such a calm, respectful environment. This wasn’t rushed, touristy or staged. It felt genuine, ethical and incredibly special. A once-in-a-lifetime moment we will never forget. If you’re in the area don’t miss this! I can’t recommend it highly enough
EJS offers an exceptional opportunity for an intimate encounter with elephants, where their humane treatment and care are paramount. Our visit was facilitated through a private tour group, which included members from another party. A culinary presentation was offered, complemented by a buffet. The sanctuary's compact size ensures accessibility and enjoyment for all age groups. Should you choose to participate in the elephant washing activity, dedicated facilities are available for personal cleansing. The experience was universally well-received, and we were even provided with complimentary merchandise.
We visited with our family and had a calm, pleasant experience. There were seven elephants, aged approximately 8 to 80 years. We participated in the feeding program, which was very enjoyable. The elephants are treated with great care and love. There is no riding or entertainment that could cause stress to the animals, which we truly appreciated. It was clear that animal welfare is a priority. Thank you for providing such a respectful and ethical experience. Kids loved the souveniers-paper that was made from elephant poo.

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
