Chomchan Thai Restaurant

4.7(1,431 reviews)$$$$

Chomchan is a well-regarded southern Thai restaurant on Yaowarad Road in Phuket Town, holding a Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition for seven consecutive years — a distinction that signals outstanding food at a reasonable price. Operating at a mid-range price point, it draws both locals and visitors looking for authentic, carefully prepared Thai cooking without the markup of tourist-facing establishments. The atmosphere carries a distinctly homey quality that several visitors compare to dining at a relative's house — informal, warm, and unpretentious. The menu focuses on traditional southern Thai dishes, with standout items including yellow crab curry and ink stir-fried squid, alongside classic Thai specialties and traditional drinks. Dishes are cooked to order, and portions reward those willing to order broadly and explore the menu rather than stick to familiar choices. The kitchen prioritises flavour over presentation flair, so the experience is firmly centred on the food itself. Good to know: Chomchan is open every day from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, making it a flexible option for lunch or dinner. The restaurant has ample parking on-site, which is a practical advantage in central Phuket Town. Given its reputation and recognition, wait times can occur during peak meal hours, so visiting mid-afternoon or arriving early for dinner is advisable. Casual attire is entirely appropriate.

Visitor Reviews

Upon stepping foot into Chomchan, it's like going into your relatives house, it has a real homey feel and set up to the restaurant, which translates into the foods that they serve. All of the dishes that we ordered were delicious and made me feel just right at home! The top dishes that I would recommend to try would be their crab curry, fried vegs and the fried omelette! The crab curry has a unique flavour profile which you can't really find anywhere else. Their fried vegs with the dried shrimps and their fried omelette were really well executed! Highly recommend a visit to anyone that's in the area! 😋 Do note that this is a cash-only establishment! ☺️

No wonder it is on Bib Gourmand 7 years in a row!!!! Everything is just simply spot on and clicking all the boxes. The yellow carb curry and the ink stir fried squid are definitely MUST try!!! The taste is just phenomenal, perfect combination in sweet, savory and a dash of punch from the heat. It is so hard to describe the entire experience with the words. Please just put it on your this and spare a meal from your journey it won't let you down.

One of the best restaurant we have been in Phuket ! We have been twice and the food is super high quality and cooked to perfection! Traditional Thai drinks also great! I really recommend the soft Shell crab&mango salad and the tamarind shrimps, one of the most delicious dish I have ever tasted !

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food

Learn the Spice Scale

Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.

Follow the Crowds

The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.

Ice Is Safe

Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
