Wat Khao Rang Samakkhitham

4.6(1,165 reviews)

Perched on the slopes of Khao Rang hill in central Phuket, this working Buddhist temple carries a meaningful legend at its heart — said to have been founded on the site where two feuding families made peace, it is regarded by local monks as a place for resolving conflict and seeking inner calm. The temple is distinguished by its brightly painted architecture, intricately carved naga serpents, and a large golden seated Buddha that serves as its centrepiece. Visitors can expect a genuinely tranquil experience, with far fewer crowds than Phuket's more prominent temples. The hilltop setting rewards those who explore fully, offering a viewpoint from which the entire city of Phuket and glimpses of the surrounding ocean are visible. The walk up is manageable for most travellers, following a shaded path through lush greenery. Allow around 30 minutes to explore the grounds at a relaxed pace. Entry to the temple is free of charge. The temple opens daily at 06:30 and closes at 17:00, making an early morning visit ideal for the quietest and coolest conditions. As with all active places of worship in Thailand, visitors should dress modestly — shoulders and knees should be covered out of respect for the site and its community.

Visitor Reviews

The view from here is amazing. One could see the entire phuket city from the viewpoint. Not only can you see the city, you could even see the ocean if you look closely enough. There is a Buddha statue on the way to this viewpoint. You could visit the Buddha statue after visiting this viewpoint. I read that one could hike up, and I wanted to, but I didn't as it was getting late. Thankfully, I didn't as there wasn't actually a proper hiking path to do so. You would actually need to walk on the same vehicular road at the fringe of the hill. It felt a little dangerous. Currently, the pagoda at the top is hoarded up with gunny sacks. But the view is still quite worth a visit.

According to the legend this temple was built where two big families made peace with each other. Monks are saying that this is a place you go if you want to find inner peace, finish fights and inner fights, see the solution of the problems. Here you can see a golden Buddha and this monastery is located right above Phuket, which, also according to the legend is with reason so that Buddha can see in light old town. In this monastery, there is a big school for new monks that are coming, and you can always find the monk to get blessing.

One of the most beautiful temples we've visited in phuket, very spiritual and not too busy. Not many tourists there so able to walk about and appreciate the beauty freely✨️ There was a Thai man there that helped us a lot, showing us how to make merit properly with the various item we purchased at the entrance of the temple. The buddah figure is stunning😍

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
