Kotung Restaurant
A well-established local eatery on Maharaj Road in central Krabi Town, Kotung Restaurant has built a loyal following among both residents and travellers for its authentic southern Thai cuisine served at fair mid-range prices. The menu carries English translations, making it accessible for international visitors, and the kitchen turns out dishes rooted in traditional southern Thai flavours — bold, fragrant, and made with care.
Guests can expect attentive, friendly service in a casual, no-frills setting. Standout items noted by visitors include soft-shell crab dishes and homemade ice cream, which are worth seeking out. One practical highlight: plain rice is served free of charge, a welcome touch that reflects the restaurant's local, community-oriented character. The interior is simple and functional rather than polished, so those prioritising atmosphere over authenticity may want to set expectations accordingly.
Open seven days a week from 11:00 to 22:00, Kotung suits everything from a midday stopover to a relaxed evening meal. The central location on Maharaj Road makes it easy to reach on foot if you are already exploring Krabi Town. Arriving slightly before or after the peak dinner window of 18:00 to 20:00 is advisable, as the restaurant draws consistent crowds. The Facebook page listed on their profile is the best place to check for any menu updates or seasonal changes before visiting.

Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
