Bad Monkey Hostel

4.7(240 reviews)

Bad Monkey Hostel is a well-regarded budget hostel situated in the Bo Put area of Koh Samui, offering an accessible base for travellers who want to experience the island without paying resort prices. The hostel's location works in its favour, placing guests within easy reach of the beach, Chaweng Road, local night markets, a lakeside area, and a hilltop temple — a solid spread of island highlights without the need for lengthy commutes. The atmosphere leans social and communal, making it a natural fit for solo travellers and backpackers. Staff are consistently highlighted in visitor feedback as a standout feature — notably approachable, attentive, and willing to go well beyond basic duties to assist guests. Rooms include bunk-style sleeping arrangements, and the bathrooms are notably spacious with hairdryers available. Prospective guests should be aware that some visitors have flagged worn mattresses and inconsistent hot water, so those with comfort-sensitive needs may want to factor this in. Good to know: Koh Samui's peak season runs from December to February, when accommodation fills quickly and prices tend to rise — booking ahead is advisable during this window. The monsoon season runs roughly from May to October, bringing heavier rainfall, particularly on the island's eastern side. Booking directly through the hostel's website at book-directonline.com may offer more favourable rates than third-party platforms.

Visitor Reviews

Planned to stay here for 3 nights extended to 4 as very very good hostel. Bathrooms are massive and lots of hairdryers to use. The staff are so lovely and kind and very attentive to what you need. Beds are very comfy. They offer a 50% wristband with the restaurant and bar below which is great and ended up going here 5 times! Would definitely stay again and recommend to others. Thank you to Lek who was so chatty and kind and made our stay great 10/10

Bella the best receptionist ever! Hats off to the girl. I had a booking problem with the full moon party, I had it booked it from another place(not from the hostel), Bella called from her own phone multiple times and sorted the things out for me in thai language. Also the hostel is in nice place to stay, 10-15mnts walk to the beach.

I had a great stay at this hostel and would definitely recommend it. The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always happy to help with recommendations or questions. The atmosphere was social but still relaxed, making it easy to meet other travelers while also getting a good night’s sleep.

Tips for Visiting Hotels & Resorts

Book Shoulder Season

May–June and September–October offer dramatic discounts (30–50% off peak rates) with fewer crowds. Weather is mixed but rarely a washout — afternoon showers clear quickly.

Compare OTAs and Direct Rates

Always check the hotel's own website after finding a rate on Agoda or Booking.com. Many Thai properties offer a best-rate guarantee or throw in perks like free breakfast when you book direct.

Pool Villa Doesn't Mean Expensive

Private pool villas in Krabi, Hua Hin, and Chiang Mai start around 2,500–4,000 THB/night — a fraction of Bali or Maldives prices. Search specifically for 'pool villa' to surface hidden gems.
