Is Koh Lanta Worth Visiting?

Is Koh Lanta Worth Visiting? Yes, If You Want Calm

Yes, Koh Lanta is worth visiting, and for a lot of travelers it's the island they'd go back to. It's a long, flat island with a string of wide, uncrowded beaches down its west coast, calm water for children, sunsets every evening, an old stilt-house town on the east side and snorkeling trips to Koh Rok. It's cheaper and slower than Phuket or Phi Phi, with beach bars rather than nightlife.

The people who leave disappointed usually wanted a party, came in the monsoon when much of the island shuts, or stayed somewhere without a scooter and found every dinner a drive away. Come between November and April, base yourself on the right beach and give it four or five nights. Below is who will love it and who should go elsewhere, the downsides and how to get around them, what a day costs, and a month-by-month verdict.

Koh Lanta in Six Facts

It's two hours from Krabi airport

Vans run from Krabi International Airport from about 08:00 to 20:30, about ฿400–540 and two to two and a half hours to your hotel. The road crosses a short car ferry to Lanta Noi and then the Siri Lanta bridge to Lanta Yai.

Speedboats run all year from Phi Phi and Phuket

Bundhaya's speedboat from Phi Phi takes 30 minutes for ฿700 all year, and speedboats from Phuket take about an hour and a half. From mid-October to May, boats also run south to Koh Lipe through the Trang islands.

November to April is the season

February is the driest month, about 24 mm of rain on 2 days. From May to October the Andaman monsoon brings rough seas, many beach bungalows, bars and dive shops close, and the Koh Rok trips stop.

It's cheaper than Phuket and Phi Phi

A budget day runs about ฿1,200 and a mid-range day about ฿3,000, against ฿1,500 and ฿4,000 on Phuket or Phi Phi and ฿1,300 and ฿3,500 in Krabi.

There's no Grab

Scooters rent for about ฿200–300 a day on a flat, easy road, and rental cars are an option on what may be Thailand's easiest island for driving. Sidecar tuk-tuks wait at Saladan pier, about ฿100–150 to Long Beach.

Four or five nights is the right length

That gives you beach days, a boat day to Koh Rok or the 4 Islands, a morning in Old Town and the national park at the southern tip. Three nights is the minimum to make the journey worth it.

Who Will Love Koh Lanta

Lanta suits travelers who want space and calm more than sights. These are the people it works best for.

Families

Lanta is often called Thailand's best family island, and the beaches are why. Klong Dao, about 3 km of sand in the north, shelves gently enough for toddlers, the resorts are low-rise and spread out, and a cooking class, ฿1,200–1,500, or Old Town fills the days off the beach. It's long been a favorite with Swedish and Danish families.

Couples and slow travelers

The further south you drive, the quieter it gets. Kantiang Bay is a postcard crescent with some of the island's best resorts, Klong Nin balances quiet and comfort, and every west-coast beach faces the sunset. A month here costs what a week does on Phi Phi, which is why so many people stay longer than planned.

Snorkelers and divers

Koh Rok's snorkeling day trips cost about ฿1,600–2,200 and run from November to April. For divers, Lanta is the gateway to Hin Daeng and Hin Muang, two of Thailand's best deep sites, with manta season early in the year.

Travelers who want a little culture with the beach

Lanta Old Town on the east coast is a strip of wooden stilt houses over the water with cafés, a free community museum and a Chinese shrine, about 25 minutes from Long Beach. Mu Ko Lanta National Park at the southern tip, ฿200 for adults, has a lighthouse and a short forest trail.

Who Should Skip Koh Lanta, or Go Somewhere Else

Lanta isn't the wrong choice for these travelers so much as the wrong default. Each has a better fit nearby.

You want nightlife

Lanta has beach bars, a few sunset spots on Klong Khong and little else after dark. For a night out, Phuket's Bangla Road or Phi Phi's beach bars are the places, and Phi Phi is only 30 minutes away by speedboat.

You can only travel between May and October

This is the Andaman monsoon. Many bungalows, bars and dive shops close, the boat trips stop and the sea is rough. The vans and the Phuket and Phi Phi speedboats still run and the resorts that stay open discount heavily, which suits long-stayers, but for a beach holiday in these months Koh Samui is the better bet.

You want the famous scenery

Lanta's beaches are long and pretty rather than dramatic. For limestone cliffs and the postcard views, Krabi and Phi Phi are close by. Krabi suits the greatest hits and short logistics, Lanta a slower, cheaper stay, which is why many people do both.

You don't want to drive or ride

Without Grab, getting around means a scooter, a rental car or tuk-tuks, and the beaches are spread along a long coast road. If you won't ride or drive, stay somewhere with restaurants on foot, around Klong Dao or Long Beach, or choose Krabi's Ao Nang instead.

The Honest Downsides, and How to Get Around Them

The complaints about Koh Lanta I see repeated come down to four things, and each has a fix.

It's quiet, sometimes too quiet

The reviews that call Lanta boring are usually from people who wanted a scene. Treat the quiet as the point. Base yourself on Long Beach or Klong Khong if you want a few bars nearby, and plan the boat days to break up the beach days.

Getting around

There's no Grab, and tuk-tuk fares add up on a long island. Rent a scooter for ฿200–300 a day if you ride, or a car if you don't, and choose a base where dinner is a walk away. If you don't ride at home, don't learn here, and check that your insurance covers it.

The monsoon closures

From May to October much of the island shuts and the islands trips stop, and the monsoon surf and rip currents make swimming risky on the open beaches. If you come then, choose a resort that stays open, swim only where the flags allow it, and keep the plan to rest, food and Old Town.

The journey

Lanta takes longer to reach than Krabi or Phuket, two to two and a half hours from Krabi airport, and the car ferry queue can add time in December and January. Book a van to your hotel, or come by speedboat from Phi Phi or Phuket and skip the road entirely.

Koh Lanta has no climate station of its own, so these are the WMO 1991–2020 normals for the Phuket station on the same Andaman coast. The sea stays at 28–30°C all year.

What a Day on Koh Lanta Costs, Compared

DestinationBudget dayMid-range day
Koh Lanta฿1,200฿3,000
Krabi฿1,300฿3,500
Phuket฿1,500฿4,000
Phi Phi฿1,500฿4,000
Koh Lipe฿1,600฿4,500
Koh Samui฿1,600฿4,500

Per person, including a room, food and local transport. Boat trips, park fees and diving are extra, and high season adds to hotel rates.

How Long to Stay and Where to Base Yourself

Four or five nights is the right length, and many people stay longer. Spend the first days on the beach, one day on a boat trip to Koh Rok or the 4 Islands, a morning in Old Town and an afternoon at the national park lighthouse. Three nights is the minimum to make the journey worth it.

Klong Dao, nearest the pier at Saladan, is the family pick, with the gentlest water and restaurants on foot. Long Beach, about 4 km of sand, is the all-round base with the most choice. Klong Khong is for driftwood bars and sunsets, Klong Nin for quiet and comfort, and Kantiang Bay further south for the island's best resorts and the most beautiful bay. The travel guide has every beach and the hotels by area.

If Not Koh Lanta, Then Where?

If something above put you off, one of these is probably the trip you're actually looking for.

Krabi, for the scenery and shorter logistics

Krabi has Railay, the cliffs, the 4 Islands and the Hong lagoon, and it's closer to the airport. Lanta is the slower, cheaper, family-friendly island two hours away, so many people do both. See Krabi vs Koh Lanta.

Phi Phi, for the spectacle

Phi Phi has the famous bays and the nightlife. Lanta is for staying a while, and Phi Phi is for the spectacle. They're 30 minutes apart all year, so two nights on Phi Phi and the rest on Lanta is the honest plan. See Phi Phi vs Koh Lanta.

Koh Samui, for the months Lanta is shut

From May to September the Gulf is drier than the Andaman coast, and Samui stays fully open. It costs more and it's busier, but it's the better beach for a summer trip. See Is Koh Samui Worth Visiting?
