Baan Jaru

4.9(465 reviews)

Baan Jaru is a small, well-regarded guesthouse on Jetyod Road in central Chiang Rai, consistently praised for the warmth and attentiveness of its host, Toddy. Unlike larger hotels where guests are left to navigate a new city alone, Toddy greets arrivals with an annotated map and a personalised rundown of what to visit, when to go, and how to make the most of the time available — a detail that regularly stands out in visitor accounts.

Rooms are simple, clean, and air-conditioned, with balconies and free Wi-Fi included. Breakfast is provided and described by guests as generous and good. The property sits in a calm, quiet setting while remaining within easy walking distance of Chiang Rai's city centre and the Night Bazaar — a practical balance that suits travellers who want comfort and convenience without being in the middle of the noise.

The guesthouse operates daily from 08:00 to 22:00, so travellers arriving late should plan accordingly or contact the property in advance. Given its small size and strong reputation, booking ahead is advisable, particularly during the cooler high season months of November through February when Chiang Rai sees the most visitors. Baan Jaru suits independent travellers and those visiting Chiang Rai for the first time who would benefit from on-the-ground local guidance.

Reviews from Google

The host Toddy was extremely friendly and helpful. Despite staying at Baan Jaru (Chiang Rai) for only one night he started by explaining what to visit and at what time depending on the time we had. He drew and wrote details on a city map upside down which was quite impressive imo. He is extremely considerate as he helped me surprise my wife with an amazing bucket of flower for our honeymoon. You could feel the personal touch at Baan Jaru. Bed was very comfortable and location is 5 minute walking distance away from night market. Room was spacious and cozy at the same time. Breakfast was simple, but really good! Definitely worth it and heavily recommended a stay at Baan Jaru.

Quiet location, yet accessible hotel for both the centre and night bazaar. Hotel owner gave us an orientation on arrival using an annotated map which proved very useful for our initial explore of the city. Our room was spacious with plenty of space to open two suitcases. King sized bed was also very comfortable. Clean and fresh towels supplied. Air-conditioning was efficient and quiet. Breakfast was eggs made to order with toast and self serve tea, coffee and selection of fruits. Lovely stay in a homestyle hotel.

This place is fantastic. The host, whose name is Toddy, has all the information you could possibly need. It is a short walk to the most popular area but we prefered this since it was very quiet and the breakfast was very good also. Stay here if you can!

Tips for Visiting Hotels & Resorts

Book Shoulder Season

May–June and September–October offer dramatic discounts (30–50% off peak rates) with fewer crowds. Weather is mixed but rarely a washout — afternoon showers clear quickly.

Compare OTAs and Direct Rates

Always check the hotel's own website after finding a rate on Agoda or Booking.com. Many Thai properties offer a best-rate guarantee or throw in perks like free breakfast when you book direct.

Pool Villa Doesn't Mean Expensive

Private pool villas in Krabi, Hua Hin, and Chiang Mai start around 2,500–4,000 THB/night — a fraction of Bali or Maldives prices. Search specifically for 'pool villa' to surface hidden gems.
