Why go, and how to do it well

This is a diving island first and everything else second. Warm, clear water and healthy reefs mean you'll find people getting their open-water certification alongside divers who've been under a hundred times, and the whole place is built around that. If you have no interest in putting your head under the water, you'll still have a nice time, but you're paying for a ticket to something you're not really using.

Mae Haad and Sairee Beach hold most of the dive schools, rooms and restaurants, and that's where the noise is: beach bars, a young international crowd, a social scene that runs late. Away from those two, the island gets quiet fast. White sand, rocky headlands and a thick jungle interior give it more shape than the average flat beach stop, and the further corners reward anyone willing to make the effort to reach them.

Tips for Visiting Islands

Check Island Closures

Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Koh Tachai close mid-May to mid-October. Some smaller islands reduce ferry service in monsoon season. Always verify schedules before planning your route.

Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy

Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.

Bring Cash to Smaller Islands

ATMs on smaller islands like Koh Kood, Koh Mak, and Koh Yao charge high fees and sometimes run out of cash. Withdraw enough on the mainland before heading over.
