Trip Corner Travel & Transportation
If you've turned up in Chiang Rai with no plan, this is the sort of agency that fixes that. Walk into the office on Phaholyothin Road, say what you want to see and how long you've got, and staff will build a private day tour around it. One pair who missed the group departure got their own guide sorted late that morning at 1,200 baht per person. The guiding gets consistent praise for actual history and context rather than a shuttle between photo stops, and drivers get credit for making long stretches feel safe.
They also handle transfers, including Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai arranged inside a few hours, and the slow boat plus border crossing into Laos. Be realistic about that last one. The boat is a public service, not a charter, the second day's vessel can be smaller and cramped, and the crossing itself ate about an hour and a half for one traveller.

Reviews from Google
We had a great time yesterday with Mai who was our tour guide for the day. We came in their office late in the morning and she was very helpful and managed to organize a private tour just for the two for us (we missed the group one). She took us to all the sights we wanted to see, explained the history, answered our questions. We were joking around, she spoke English very well so we were really pleased with our experience. It was 1200 baht per person.
We loved our all day tour with Mai. She was so informative and easy going. We saw some amazing spots, and learned a lot more than we would have if we had just visited on our own. Highly recommend!
It was easy to book the boat with this company the price was good and they help you with the border crossing. The boat is a public boat, don't expect a 5 star experience. The border crossing took about 1.5 hours. Remember to have USD or you'll pay a lot more if you pay in Thai Baht. The boat the second day was smaller and a bit cramped. The boat does not stop on luangprabang town it stops 25 minutes outside it so you have no choice but to take a taxi into town for 100kip each that doesn't even drop you to your hostel only to the centre of town (scam).

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Popular Activities Online
Booking platforms like GetYourGuide give you instant confirmation and, on many activities, free cancellation — and you can read recent reviews before committing. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
