Wat Phantao

Wat Phantao stands as one of Chiang Mai's most visually distinctive temples, notable for its beautifully preserved teak wood viharn — a relative rarity among the city's many historic wat. Founded in the 14th century, the temple features intricate gilded accents, richly coloured glass mosaics, and traditional Lanna architectural details that reward close inspection. Its location on Prapokklao Road, just beside the more famous Wat Chedi Luang, makes it a natural companion stop for those exploring the old city's temple district. The atmosphere at Wat Phantao tends to be noticeably quieter and more contemplative than its larger neighbours, allowing visitors to appreciate the craftsmanship and spiritual character of the space without heavy crowds. The teak structure itself is the centrepiece, with carved wooden panels and a peacock mosaic above the entrance among the most photographed details. The temple remains an active place of worship, so a respectful and unhurried pace is appropriate. Wat Phantao is open daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, making it accessible across most of the day. As with all temples in Thailand, visitors are required to dress modestly — shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering any building. Entry is free or involves a small voluntary donation. Visiting in the morning tends to offer softer light for photography and a calmer environment before tour groups arrive later in the day.
