Wat Phantao

4.6(2,187 reviews)

Most of Chiang Mai's old city temples are brick and plaster. This one is dark teak, and that single fact makes it worth the ten minutes it takes to walk through. The viharn dates back to a 14th-century foundation and it's the woodwork that holds you: carved panels, gilded accents, coloured glass mosaics, and a peacock above the entrance that everyone ends up photographing. Go close. The detail is the point.

It sits on Prapokklao Road right beside Wat Chedi Luang, so most people arrive having just seen the enormous ruined chedi next door. That works in your favour. Crowds thin out here and the mood drops several notches, which is the main reason I'd rather spend time in this one. It's a working temple, not an exhibit, so keep your voice down and don't rush it. Mornings give you softer light and fewer tour groups.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
