Why go, and how to do it well
Nitasrattanakosin, the Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall, tells the story of Bangkok's old royal city in nine multimedia rooms on Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue, from its grandeur and ceremonies to its architecture, communities and everyday life. You see it on a guided round. Rounds leave every 30 minutes from 09:30, the last at 15:00, for up to 32 people at a time, and the hall is split into two routes of about two hours each, the first through seven rooms and the second through two.
That makes it the most structured museum in the old town, and good background before a day at the Grand Palace and the temples. One route is enough for most people, and to do both the hall says to start before 13:00. Finish on the top floor, Rattanakosin Sky View, which looks out over the Loha Prasat of Wat Ratchanatdaram, Mahakan Fort and the Golden Mount.
It's open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00, public holidays included, and closed on Mondays. Foreign visitors pay ฿100 and Thai citizens ฿70. Children, students enrolled in Thailand, visitors over 60, monks and visitors with disabilities go free. The hall is at 100 Ratchadamnoen Klang, a short walk from the Golden Mount.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
Go Early Morning
Big-name temples are dramatically less crowded in the first hour after opening. You'll also avoid the worst of the midday heat and get softer light for photos.
